:stoned Dogs twice as bad as SUV's for environment

http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20091220...inganimalsfood

Man's best friend could be one of the environment's worst enemies, according to a new study which says the carbon pawprint of a pet dog is more than double that of a gas-guzzling sports utility vehicle.

Big brother wants to control everything. Every single aspect of everyone's lives. I am sure we will add a pet tax to the very very long list of additional taxes coming soon.

nah they will have some system where all pet dogs must be infertile, only breeders will be allowed to have fertile dogs/cats . Then they will do the same thing with humans about 50 yrs later

Is it even possible these days to impart information without people thinking you're judging them negatively?

If it's a proven fact that pet owners have a larger carbon footprint, then just suck up the reality! Nobody is saying you shouldnt be permitted to own the damn thing and feed it the most expensive endangered meat from the most remote location. Just someone stating some data regarding such things.

It's what actions will be taken due to the data that concerns me.

Well then when some action comes to some congress or governing body concerning pets, attend the meeting and vote it down.

It's just a book that some reporter decided would be a fine "human interest" story if they pretended it was a threat to pet owners. We should be more pissed at this type of bullshit "reporting" than anything in the story itself.

If you want a good eco-animal, get some egg laying hens. You get free eggs, fertilizer for your garden, and an occasional chicken dinner.

They're always coming up with some new bullshit to throw at us.

I know it takes 500 barrels of oil to put a carrot on my dinner table, and 2 billion tricarboflorons are released when I use a flashlight -- so now my dog is the problem?

Lets hope so. It is amazing we even allow people to have pets in this day and age. I know lots of people are lonely and it takes the place of friends etc but as a society maybe those people could grow up or something?

The problem is not that people have pets, it's what they feed them.

Pets used to live mainly on leftovers. They didn't mind it, it was cheap for the owners, and it had very little impact on the environment. A situation that didn't need fixing.

Along came the pet food industry, convincing people that their pets needed "special" gourmet foods. People bought the line and bought the food. Now, the pet food industry is worth over $11 billion annually in the US alone, and over a third of all pet dogs in the US are overweight.

And of course it has an environmental impact, too. The meat that is used in pet food comes from factory farms, which feed the livestock high-calorie food consisting of corn, wheat, soy, etc. Those crops take lots of land to grow, but even more importantly, lots of oil - oil for fertilizer, oil for transportation, oil to run farm equipment, etc.

The only ones who benefit from this all are the pet food companies and the farmers. Pet owners, pets and the environment all suffer.

that's measured in jizzoflorons. So that number would be 2.34 million jizzoflorons.
