I love mine. Just still not happy about paying what you have to pay to get one. But this is as good as it gets.

If you really want state of the art you will have to go for a custom assembly. I don't really think it's that much more difficult than an off the shelf box, and you will get more for less.

If you must get off the shelf, then look at Alienware.

Mac Pro.

"Apple is planning on using the Xeon Gulftown processor in a future Mac Pro revision due in early 2010. When placed in a dual-processor configuration, this would give the Mac Pro 12 physical and 24 logical cores. Such massively multi-core designs have been expected for some time with under-the-hood changes in Snow Leopard specifically preparing for such a possibility"

Well...I looked into it before and was on the verge of buying until I learned about alot of complaints. Lack of support being one...but also it being overpriced...pretty much junk. Anyone have anything good to say about it?

I have never had a Mac and I really do not have the inclination to start over...so to speak.

I would never buy off the shelf, but that's just me. Spec out some nice parts and build yourself.

I second this vote, if you want something off the shelf. If you like to get your hand dirty then I'd suggest you go down to your local PC shop and ask the staff there to build you something within your budget.

Unless you're constantly playing games, running a massive site, or compiling code 24x7 most PCs around
500-800 will be fine.

If there's anything I'd invest in it would be good monitors and lots of them. You can never have enough
desktop real estate.
