Seeing Stephen Fry on Friday

Just found out I 'won' (they are free but you have to apply) tickets to a taping of a BBC Radio 4 show's Christmas special. The host is a David Mitchell (not sure if he is known out of the UK at the moment but I really enjoy his comedy work) but I didn't know who the guest were until I got the tickets.

Turns out they are Rob Brydon (British people will know him) and Stephen Fry. Now, to a geek like me, that is going to be pretty good.

Having seen Micheal Palin at a taping earlier this year, I wonder if I can fit in another comedic British national treasure by the end of the year..lol

Hugh Laurie is awesome.

House is actually a really awesome show but very non-formula.

I dont get the bit where he obsesses about his friend and when he loses his friend, he spies on him for weeks. I mean is this a show about a sad doctor who's a bit of a freak? Whatever it is, Hugh Laurie is awesome at it.

OOh I am very jealous sounds great! I went to a QI taping this summer (the episode they showed last week!) and it was 3 hours of non stop fun! the shame is they tame it sooo much for broadcast, the recording was so near the bone and hysterical. I actually now find the show almost dull, wandering what else I am missing. (For those that don't know QI is an ad libbed comedy panel show about meaningless trivia, it lasts just 30mins when broadcast!)

I would love to meet that guy, love all the stuff he does. QI is great. Just waiting for all the useless crap I have learned to come up on a pub quiz.

When he had the private eye guy. I agree that was pretty good.

Somehow, Hugh Laurie got sexy too. Never saw that coming.

More proof you are a sister from another mother! I so LOVE Stephen Fry They showed his special about traveling across the US here recently and I went and Googled the hell out of him.

And don't get me started on Hugh Laurie......I love him as House but love him even more when he's himself.

I have trouble finding him sexy as 'himself' because he is always (brilliantly) playing somebody silly over here. He also voices over a lot of commercials. In fact, when I first started watching House over here, I had problems with the fact that at the commercial break he would be voicing over a diaper commercial with is 'wacky' British voice.

Yet, when on House he is totally sexy playing it straight. Then, my history shows, I have a thing for overly intelligent arrogant men ..lol

Stephen Fry is as near as the modern UK has to Oscar Wilde.

The play between Laurie and Fry in this episode is some of the best stuff ever. I couldn't find much on youtube of their actual interaction but still a great episode.

Plus, in general, Hugh Laurie has done some of the finest comedic drag work ever, in my view.

If it was possible, I now love them more!

I can't remember when I "found" British humor, but I swear my Wales roots take hold because I'd rather watch a British comedy over the US shows (especially when they are copies, i.e. The Office, Whose Line is it Anyway?, etc.) any day. I have to settle for BBCA.

Oddly, most of the stuff I see being shown on BBC America aren't even BBC shows.

See if you can find the game show that Fry hosts called QI ..possibly the most intelligent game show ever but yet silly enough you are left with a side ache from laughing. Plus, you learn a ton of totally useless information.

You need to get a hold of his stand up shows. He is a brilliant comic. Plus, did you know that he just did this insane sporting thing this year for charity when he did nothing but run marathons for 7 weeks having never run much before hand.

My fave Izzard routine - as acted out by lego:

I remember enjoying "Peter`s Friends" A British comedy/drama that starred Stephen Fry - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0105130/

It was a long time ago that I see it (16 - 17 years?) so may seem dated now but at the time, I thought it was very good.

I saw that when I was a teen before moving to the UK and enjoyed it. Then I moved here and understood how many of the people in it were big comedy or acting names. After all, Emma Thompson is in it. Hugh Laurie was in it too. The only one that really stands out as a 'why' on the casting is that Rita Rudner is in it. Strange.

It was very funny and it actually turned out to be a QI rematch special. So, we had Stephen Fry and Alan Davies and then also Rob Brydon and David Lloyd on top of David Mitchell as the host. All of them are such quick witted people. I don't think I have laughed so much (and for free) in public in ages.

My group of friend inadvertently played a part in a joke portion of the show that ended in Stephen Fry playfully calling a friend a 'cunt'. He turned to me and said 'I have never been so happy to be called a cunt in my life'. I am pretty sure that bit won't be in the show put part of it could be since they kept referring back to it.

Anyway..yes, it was a fantastic time and it will be on Radio 4 at 6:30pm on December 28th and then, I am sure, on iplayer.
