Photo Retouching Rates?

My employee and myself do all of our photo & video editing work here in my office, but I am curious what others are charging for this service. I have been shooting a lot of photo sets lately and this is taking a lot of time now. Let's say 1000 photos of a model in various photo sets and outfits, and retouching needs to be done to fix skim blemishes, minor acne, possibly remove a small tattoo. Who does this and what do you charge for such a service?

I dont charge by the picture. All pics are different and its fairest for both client and retoucher...

i pay our photo editor $15 an hour, she's a great editor and an expert tattoo remover - unfortunately she's also an accountant now and doesn't have enough time.

I recommend that you get a good makeup artist. That will save you some serious headache in post. Mine has body tattoo make up that really works well in picks.

I edit all of my own pics, your Photog should do the same.

No, I don't really outsource any significant work. I am pretty self contained in my own office, as I feel that is the most efficient way to work. I produce a lot of photo and video content and I feel that it needs my personal touch or at least supervision with my trusted long term employee. Doing everything in-house is best for security and my workflow. If anything, I would rather get someone else in here part time doing this kind of work, than bothering with the hassle of giving access to my content to someone outside. It's just too slow to upload to ftp or to bother with swapping hard drives back and forth.

If its not large volume you are completely right

Do a Craigslist ad in your local area, and you might get some hits.

If you have a college in town that teaches computer graphics, you might be able to find some student help fairly inexpensively too (post a few fliers or take out an ad in the campus paper).

I have a really top notch makeup artist already- actually more than one. I generally shoot young girls that have pretty nice skin, so retouching is not an issue most of the time. We edit all the pics and all content here in my office anyway for re-orienting, organization and simple re-touching. But once in a while I may shoot a particular model that needs some more re-touching work despite being hot, and then that job becomes labor intensive and slows my whole office down for a few days or a week. So I was curious what others charge for that service. If anything I'd consider maybe adding another local part timer sometimes to help out on those log jam weeks.

Do you do all the work personally or do you RE-Outsource the work to some south-east-asian?

BTW, how many pics per hour in average? Photoshop edition and size optimization are included?

I'm amazed sometimes at what people skilled in this are willing to accept as compensation... Main stream corrections I charged minimum 75$ hourly for "retouching". Proper color/photo correction is not something most people have a clue about.

Nice work there.

I just wanted to mention that it is almost impossible to quote per pic due to the variation of editing requirements needed per pic.
Hourly rate is best or simply a full time editor who works 40hrs a wk for set salary.
I have offshore editors that work full time at a cost of $700 a month just to give you an idea of outsourcing rates.

I do ALL my work personally. I have never once outsourced anything in my time here.

Average, 10-20 pics per hour. With stretch marks and acne it can be 6 pics per hour, but if its just color correcting I can do them much quicker.

I can optimize for web also, yes. I usually always downsize them file size wise, but i dont always make a significant cut without the client wanting it. A lot of times I hand the work back before they watermark it and such. When I work with raw files i usually hand them back in the same size and format just with the proper corrections.

i took lessons from the gentleman who did all suze randall's editing/re-touching
he has since passed
i find that it is comparable to make up artist, the good ones are worth lots of money whereas the average ones are very affordable, just all depends what your needs are.
you have to have a really great eye for colour and an impeccable patience, i really consider this a craft in itself.

I agree that is also how I like to run things all in house as much as possible. Unfortunately we have found ourselves outsourcing more and more as they have a faster turnaround.
