I've heard stories about how people get drunk and wasted in Vegas and regret it.

They wake up the next day with hangover and get annullments.

Depends on how much you want to spend. If you can afford bottle service then there are many good clubs, if not some of the best clubs will have you waiting outside like a looser for half the night.
The good thing about the vegas clubs in the hotels is a least you are not stuck outside in the cold waiting in line.
Also it important to find out what clubs are the "in clubs" on which nights.

Clubs I have had good nights in are :

LAX - Luxor
Pure - Caesars Palace
Body English - Hardrock
Blush - Wynn
