Best Linux Distro for FLV encoding?

Which is the best Linux Distro to setup a FLV encoding server on. Have Ubuntu on the box right now, but seem like only tools are command line based?

Anyone have experience setting up a linux box to just be served video and encode it to flv?

If I can't get this working, I'm just going to go out and buy a mac pro and install Episode on it and let it do the chunking... but since I have this other box here I thought it would be nice to get it to work. I already have it remote controllable via my other macs..

yea, makes little difference what distro you use... and linux=command line tools, if you want flashy icons and easy to use interface mac is probably the way to go

Ya, I figured as much. To bad. I can't even look at the harddrive with ubuntu.. everything I try to do it asked me for a password and does not accept mine. I even reinstalled it from scratch and still doesn't work.

Maybe you should switch to a distro that is even EASIER than Ubuntu if one exists

Na, I don't have time to mess with it. Don't understand what the whole password things about, on a fresh install.

Thought It might be an easy answer to my need but nada.

              try the command sudo
but you might be better off with a managed hosting solution ;)

I think you misunderstood the problem.

I have a crapload of encoding to do, and I wanted to see if I could take one of my older computers that use to be an XP box, and make it into a sort of encoding server. (XP is long gone on this system btw)

I installed Ubuntu to it and poked around for a bit, but in reading on the net etc, I didn't see any GUI option for ffmpeg or Memencoder. I just wanted to be able to dump my raw video into a watch folder and have it chunk out the required FLV video I need. (I can do this with my Episode Pro, I just didn't want to have to steal my wifes Mac for this job. Had I been able to figure it out she would still have it.. but looks like she's going to be donating it the cause.

As far as the hosting goes... I have a fully manages server over at Mojohost...

I am going to try one more thing and see if I can hack a copy of OS X onto the system. It does seem to have all the right hardware etc.... Now, that would sweet... LOL. (Oh and before I hear bitching about hacking os x etc.. I do own a 5 user license of OS X Leopard and have only used 3 of them...)

Face it you're a brain dead fucking faggot who shouldn't be using Ubuntu. If you need a GUI then it's definitely not for you fucking fag.

Incidentally, as it turns out there are some GUI interfaces for ffmpeg under ubuntu. Winff for one. I reinstalled Ubuntu again, formating the drives from scratch. Seems there was an older version on there (7.10) causing my issues with that password. Now everything seems to be working great.

Google will probably turn up several more GUI front ends to ffmpeg and mencoder.

As for the password, when you install you set up TWO passwords. One, you use
when you log in, and it gives you access to your personal files. That's what you
use for day to day work.

The other is the admin password, for a user called "root". That's used for system
admin, so anything you do in your ordinary work can't mess up the system, because
you have no access to the system level files without first using the second, "root"
password. That's one big reason that Linux, and Mac OSX which is almost the same
as Linux at the system level with different artwork, are considered so much more
secure than Windows. With any professional type system, anything other than
Windows, just because you're allowed to USE the sytem doesn't mean you're
allow to fuck up the system. Thus, no worries about viruses, browser security holes,
etc. - your browser, running as your user name, has no access to system level stuff
so you can't mess it up if you tried.

You'll notice that in Vista and Windows 7 Microsoft is starting to move in this
direction - they make you log in as "Administrator" before they show you the
control panel or make it easy to do certain other system level stuff. They are
getting users used to what it will look like when they have the same security that
other systems have had since the 1970s. Right now Windows just fakes it - you
can actually change any system stuff you want using any user name, they just
don't show you how, so you have to use a program other than "Control Panel"
(such as a virus). But the plan is that Windows 2013 will have the same separation
of user versus system that Linux, FreeBSD, Mac, etc. have.

Of course, Linux et al moved beyond that several years ago when the NSA built
SELinux and that what you have now, but Windows will eventually get there too,
probably sometime around 2018-2022 I'd bet.

Yes, this is what I thought. The thing is, that when I installed Ubuntu it only asked me for the one account and password creation. Then when i went to try and do anything it would ask me for the password yet it didn't take it. Turns out there was a older version on the box and I was booting into it automatically and didn't even realize it. Reformatted everything clean and reinstalled the latest version again and now its fine. Used winff and had it batch encode some video last night as a test. did a decent job but not the quality I am looking for, also, very slow. So, I'm looking at just going ahead and using my Episode pro, buying a Matrox Max hardware h.264 encoder and starting there.
