People watch the beginning to see him make people cry or fume with rage... then they watch the last part to see the best of the best and who will win.
Without him, there's only the last part to watch... and even then, it still won't be quite the same. I don't think it would do well without him. |

AI became lame, last season was horrible... He's just going to move on with another show and bring the audience with him.

On the English equivalent (X-Factor) his endorsement is really the only comment that actually means anything to the singers. The other judges just make up the numbers.
American Idol and the X-Factor may as well have been called the Simon Cowell show.
