Testing out my new Canon

I've never really shot with any nice dSLR's besides two friends Nikon D40 and Canon 20D but I just bought myself a Canon Digital Rebel XS - yeah, a base model but it's something to learn with. Always been a huge fan of shooting but never spent the money on nice camera and always used point-and-shoot's.

So I just got my camera in and took it up to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania to practice. Mind you, this is my first REAL time playing with a dSLR.

Give me some thoughts, ideas or tips. I'd love to have them

Nice work. I have been shooting with Canon for a long time now. Good glass, fun cameras. This should inspire you.

I was looking at a Nikon but a buddy of mine who shoots professionally told me to go with Canon so I spent a few extra bucks and got the Rebel.

I love shooting and that middle picture is my favorite by far. No flash, sitting in the hallway with one light. Wish I could compare it to Quantum-x's stuff. He shoots some insane photos.

And it definitely inspires me! I hope to be shooting some content soon. I've got a few leads but just need to work on my skills and build my set which should be very soon.

Any idiot can buy a camera. It takes skill to take pictures. You have a great camera and apparently a good eye. Good luck.

Great camera. You're going to eventually want to do some precision metering, and you'll need a light meter to do it, especially if you're using flash. The evaluative light meter in the camera only goes so far, unless you carry a grey card... but it only works for ambient light.

I recommend the Sekonic L-358 light meter. This allows you to set the camera to the exact exposure (night time being the exception), and not what the camera's auto-mode guesses will make an OK photo.

I do plan on picking one of these up if I do some shoots, which might come sooner then I thought.

Here's 5 shots I took and made into a panorama photo that I really liked.

Are you going to pick up a battery grip? The vertical grip is cool and less worries about running out of battery power.

To tell you the truth, I took at least 400 photos and my battery was still full power, so there is no need for the battery grip. Plus, I love the grip now.

You must have small hands - my 350D (which I think is a Rebel XT or XTi in NA) is hard to hold for long periods, because my little finger has nothing to grip... so it just curls awkwardly under the body. Gets a bit sore after a while.

Those batteries last forever. I have the grip on my D5 because it also accepts aa's should that unhappy event occur and I also needed it to add a flash battery pack because Canon claims that having that flash battery pack mounted directly to the camera will interfere with the sensors. The vertical grip ain't no thing and it isn't worth the money unless you need it. You don't need the additional weight.

I am looking to get the grip down the road, but a couple essentials come first.

I have a Canon Rebel XSI with a battery grip and Speedlite
430EX II Flash, I like it because it has the best of both worlds , if you need decent photo's and time is a factor and you don't feel like setting up the camera , ie ( real estate pictures , vehicle classifieds ) It takes pretty good shots on auto mode. If you want to spend the time and adjust the camera it's fairly straightforward only 3 things you basically need to worry about on Manual mode and you can get some awesome photos from it. I found the trick is to just take alot of pictures and fine tune after each shot , Once you learn how to change a setting it only takes a few min till your taking great shots.

I had exactly that same problem with my XT... Now I've got the 7D and it's much more comfortable to hold. The drawback is that it's also much heavier. So heavy with the 24-70 (and sometimes 580EX) that I really dread using it unless I'm doing a shoot.

I put a 580EX on my 350D once, then I put on a 70-200mm lens... the lens wanted to drop and the flash made it top heavy, along with the "this camera grip is too small" issue the whole thing was TOTALLY unbalanced and felt like it was going to jump out of my hands at any moment.

I do have small hands but my pinky also curls under the body but it's not that much of an annoyance or bother to me. It actually helps me stabilize it a bit better IMO.

Yup. I was looking at the Canon T1i - it's a few hundred more than I paid. If I need video, I'll go grab a shitty little HD camcorder for roughly the same difference in price. I'm sure I'll kick myself in the ass for not getting it but maybe I'll upgrade eventually.

The new Canon DSLRs take amazing video - and if you already have a wide variety of lenses, you can get some cool effects. A nice feature is that the video is captured in 24fps, so it looks more like film than 30fps video:

Check this sample video out.

Still feel the same?

I feel the same and I have a 5D and a Sony Z1U. The Canon takes amazing quality videos, but the whole process takes time to set up. I mount my radio mic on the hot flash and get semi decent sound (only auto). It is awkward as a hand held video camera because the screen doesn't swivel and you just can't work fast enough for this business. However, if you want to create "art", take the time becuase it is an amazing camera. Oh yeah, and there is no servo zoom if that is important to you.

When I was presented with my Canon I thought it was a waste of money as I love the convenience of the P&S, but it did not take long for the P&S to become a pure backup cam.

Nice pics. Did you get a polarizer lens?

Nope, this is just the basic kit lens. Once I get used to it a bit more, I'll go buy some goodies

Get the polarizer lens, it is less than $20, will help with bright days. Will keep you from scratching the main lens.

Ohhh the filters. Yeah, walmart had a pack for $20 but I'm not sure if they're the 58mm or not. I'll check this weekend.

Your filter must be a circular polarizer for auto focus lenses.

That's a very good point, one I hadn't considered before - you'll just have to lie down for awkward angles like you do when taking a still shot! :D

I'm still trying to decide whether to "downgrade" from a 1DsII to a 5DII... the main reason is higher ISO/lower noise images, the 1DsII technology is 5+ years old now, but having video for occasional use would be nice too.

The thing I'd miss is the extra (and more sensitive) focus points of a 1 series.

I recommend the Sekonic L-358 light meter. This allows you to set the camera to the exact exposure (night time being the exception), and not what the camera's auto-mode guesses will make an OK photo.

I agree, good flashmeter !

This is a really nice camera, I was thinking about buying a canon Xs1 or T1i.
