Have You Guys Ever Gone To A Concert And Not Been Allowed To Bring A Camera?

Just got this e-mail from Ticketmaster? WTF?

Dear Motley Crue Fan,

Please note that no cameras will be allowed into the Air Canada Centre on Thursday, February 4, 2010 for the Motley Crue event.

Thanks for being a fan!

Yeah I got the same problem, not a camera but an mp3 player / recorder I had with me.
They kept it for me at a security stand in Warsaw 2005 when I was on a Dio show.

It's kind of absurd since you can't make a worthwhile audio / video recording unless you would have at least semi profi equipment and conditions.

I tried to tape a Lour Reed concert three years ago, just for me to remember and man all those amateur recordings suck so much it's only encouraging to buy the real thing.

Yes, coincidentally it was at the Air Canada Centre too. Metallica and Godsmack. Unfortunately I only found out at the door, so I had to leave my camera with them. They gave me a ticket and I had to come back and claim it after the show was over.

Never had a problem anywhere else.

They patted us down at the door. You will probably be OK with a cellphone / blackberry camera.

Plenty. I've attended or worked security at over 100 concerts over the years and many of them had a no cameras policy. Never really questioned it, it's often according to the band's wishes. "No recording devices" is commone too.

Just get creative and sneak one in.

It's because Vince Neil is so fat nowadays that taking pictures and posting them could only harm the band.

Pretty much all concerts prohibit the use of cameras. When I went to see Guns N' Roses on saturday the guy searched my girlfriends purse and told us we would have to bring the camera back to our car. I complained a bit and he let us go. I managed to snap off a few and get a bit of video but inside the venue one of the 'security' was on my ass and told me to put it away or be tossed out. Pretty fucking harsh when all I wanted was some personal pictures. Its not like I had some kind of professional camera. They don't say anything about cellphones going in but will give you shit if they see you taking pics. I find the ScotiabankPlace here in Ottawa to be especially bad for this. Most of concerts I've been to in Montreal, no one cares.

Is it just "hairbands" from the 80's that don't allow you to take pics anymore? Jeeesh?! You would have thought they would embrace the new social networking machine to get their stuff out there to a bigger audience for FREE?!

BTW in retrospect i remember one other time i wasn't allowed to bring a camera and when i went to get padded down by security i just palmed the camera in my hand. When i speak my arms to get searched the guy asked me if i was carrying a camera and i said NOPE! Haha if he looked up he would have seen the camera clearly in my hand haha! Got thru no problemo ;-)

there seems to be a recurring theme here of you being padded down, I guess we all have to get our jollies in some way

Like I used to be seriously anti the Axl Guns n Roses version, never even heard the Chinese democracy, but I would probably go if there would be a concert, too curious.

Exactly, more free content branding their name, and usually in shitty quality that can't compete with the real thing..

It's not a bad idea, just because of all the stupid fucks that take 100 pictures and record videos. The last concert I was at I was on the floor and I couldn't see shit because everybody had cameras in the air.

Every concert I have EVER been to had something similar printed on the tickets. The fact that everybody has tiny cameras and cell cameras etc...Cameras have become less of an issue recently.

Most of the time you can't take cameras inside so I don't even bother.

I did take an SLR with a 200 mm lens into a Madonna concert on her VIRGIN tour.
Was standing about seven rows back from the center of the stage and being so tall I stood out and she would see me bring my camera up and focus on that. There is one part where she rolls around on the stage in a wedding dress and she rolled over looking directly at me. It was actually kind of surreal to look through the camera and into her eyes. The pictures turned out poor because of the lighting ( no flash ) I was drunk and the crowd was surging where I was at but it was still a unique and unforgettable experience.

Another time I tried to sneak a camera with a 600 mm lens on it to take pictures of one of those wrestling championship things back when Hulk Hogan was at the height of his career. No cameras allowed but I managed to get in by holding it against my side covered under my jacket. I got bored and went to the concession stand to get a drink and was standing with my friends when two Sheriffs came up and told me put my hands up in the air and not to move.

Then one of them slowly pulled my jacket open to look at what he thought was a rifle hanging from a strap over my shoulder. When he saw it was a camera they escorted me to the door and told me I could come back after I put the camera in my car.

BTW I got some killer video when Motley Crue had the Bootleg tour and let everyone bring still and video cameras inside.

This subject reminded me of the time this girl was talking to me about my photography and how her Dad used to be really into making movies a long time ago strickly as a hobby. She said she thinks his movie camera was 16mm and he had all kinds of equipment for the sound and stuff.

Then she says he had even taken it to the last concert Elvis ever had. He had his camera set up on a tripod and everything. I asked her where the film was and she said probably in a box up in the attic. I told here that it could be very very valuable and she should try and find it.

She looked at me like, yeah whatever

Most venues I have been to in London have a no camera policy. Of course the can't ban phones but the last gig I went to at the O2 (great venue btw) the security staff were kicking people out if they were too obvious about using the cameras on them.

I took my daughter to see green day. It was at least a mile hike from the parking to the location of the concert and the security guard made me take my camera back to the car. I even asked if I could just give him the batteries and he said no. Fuck head.

Unless you can bring in a nice camera with lens the photos usually don't come out well anyway. I have taken photos at shows with a small digital camera and the photos come out too dark. The last show I went to was Rush at Jones Beach theater, NY.

happens all the time, most of the time really. i just shove it in my underwear and take it out later. i did get caught with one at the Conan Obrien show in NYC 7 years ago, and security were going to take my camera away, but i managed to talk them out of it, barely.

At my 4 year old daughter's dance concert they actually made an announcement halfway through saying that "prohibited recording devices and cameras will be confiscated"

I can't even take pics of my own daughter at a noncommercial performance??????? I have to settle for a shitty DVD that shows everyone in a wide shot rather than my daughter in closeup?

Incidentally the performance used all current top 40 songs... I wonder if they acquired all legal rights to play them. I bet they didn't.

Same here but life goes on and I didn't want to miss out so I went and thought they were great. I didn't have high expectations for the new band but they were pretty tight. Axl was great. His voice isn't perfect these days like in 88 but he still gives it all hes got.

They played a lot of the old stuff, majority of the songs were from appetite/UYI/Lies and about 9 or so from the new album. And some unexpected stuff was axl doing a bit of Pink Floyd's Another Brick in the Wall and Bumblefoot doing the Pink Panther theme. Not to mention bringing out Bubbles from the Trailer Park Boys to sing Liquor and Whores with GNR which was pretty fun.

I would see them again for sure. It was a good time. And yeah, they didn't start until 11:15 when they were scheduled for 9 but I knew this going in and didn't get there till after 10. They played till 2am, nearly a 3 hour set which bands rarely do these days. I could see if you had no idea you might be a little pissed but Axl has never been one for going in on time. I think he does it on purpose for whatever reason. Man, there were some real strange looking people. From hot chicks in leather pants to skinheads to old mulletheads. People watching at these thing can be fun.

Setlist was:
1. Chinese Democracy
2. Welcome To The Jungle
3. It's So Easy
4. Mr. Brownstone
5. Sorry
6. Better
7. Richard Fortus Guitar Solo
8. Live And Let Die
9. If the World
10. Dizzy Reed Piano Solo
11. Street Of Dreams
12. Instrumental Jam
13. Rocket Queen
14. Scraped
15. DJ Ashba Guitar Solo
16. Sweet Child O' Mine
17. You Could Be Mine
18. Instrumental Jam
19. Axl Rose Piano Solo
20. November Rain
21. Instrumental Jam
22. Bumblefoot Guitar Solo
23. Out Ta Get Me
24. Knockin' On Heaven's Door
25. Nightrain
Encore:
26. Instrumental Jam
27. Liquor & Whores with Bubbles
28. Patience
29. This I Love
30. Shackler's Revenge
31. Madagascar
32. Paradise City

Did you ever take good pictures at a concert? The only decent ones I ever made were when I had a vip pass and was allowed in front of the fences of a festival, in daylight, with a professional camera with telelphoto lens. I don't think that artists/managements worry too much about pics being taken with mobile phones etc. as they generally sort of suck because of the distance and the light circumstances.

Its difficult but if you can manage to snap off enough you can typically get a handful of good ones. One key thing to remember for small cameras is to make sure to set your ISO to 80 (or so) instead of auto. A good zoom with image stabilizer can help too. If anyone has any better/other tips for taking pics at concerts with 'snapshot' type cameras i'd love to hear them.
