Looks great for people who have more money than time.
If you have more time than money, that old P300 you have in the garage will
make a great NAS/SAN/DAS box. See for example either of these free distributions
tat will turn your old hardware into a storage server:

looks pretty nice and not badly priced.

my dad has one from HP that works great. i had (havent reset it back up yet) a custom setup with an old PC that I can access anywhere and ran windows media center. cost me almost nothing in parts, just some software
