Do you listen to any music that's "out of character"?

Mainly I still listen to much of the music I grew up listening too; punk rock, glitter, rock n roll, rockabilly, psychobilly, etc. But I also have some eclectic music tastes too. Stuff that people are surprised I listen to and that ultimately I wind up jamming to alone since no one else I know likes it

I was just enjoying some Gypsy Kings and felt like making this post. Maybe there are a few of you out there that feel the same way, or have music that you listen to in secret because you're embarassed by it Here are some of my faves that I just can't seem to get anyone else into:

Gypsy Kings- Un Amor

Mori Shinichi- Onnano Tameiki

I love Mori, though from what I understand he's an aquired taste. I drop that shit on people in the car where there's no escape.

It's ok if you guys don't like it, my friends don't either. Just felt like sharing / exposing you guys to some different stuff.

I listen to a WIDE variety of music. Of course I have my favorites but my music selection ranges from old school gangsta rap to country, techno, opera, rock, etc...

I think that oftentimes people pigeonhole themselves into specific niches/genres, thinking they can only like their specific niche/genre or they won't "fit in."

I used to do that. Now my rule is simply: like what you like. Like what makes you feel good. Like what makes you think "damn, I like this." Who cares who sings it? Who cares who the drummer is? What does it matter if some corporate entity created it? If a song makes you feel good, you find your foot tapping... just admit you like the song.

Right now I'm listening to Otep. An hour ago I was listening to Miles Davis. In 10 minutes I'll probably listen to Jay-Z. Then maybe some Pantera. Then I might throw on some Nina Simone.

My 2 dirty little music secrets is I adore Beethoven and pretty much any kind of 'folk music' but most specifically I love Celtic Bagpipes. I got a CD from my mother in law years ago and it is my favorite CD ever!

That reminds me of Tesco Vee, frontman for The Meatmen-

You'd never guess by looking at him, or listening to his music, but ABBA is his favorite band.

I pretty much exclusively listen to punk and thrash, with a select few older rap acts thrown in here and there. But I have a soft spot for country music that comes out oncein a while. Most of my friends can't believe it when I throw in Willie Nelson...

Yeah, I guess so, have episodes when I hear something somewhere, do a bit of a research and then just experiment.

I used to listen to jazz a lot when I was playing in a band for a bit, so sometimes I tune in www.wbgo.org that have also great blues and soul programs - works the best at night, after all most of that music has been inspired and orchestrated in places like New York and after midnight.

Then I got interested in songwriting lately so I listened to Leonard Cohen or even old school country like Kris Krisstoferson.

Then, never in my life did I listen to the Cure, but after I saw the Mike Figgis movie "Career Girls" from 1997, that movie was some of the most intense and real stories I've ever seen and the music just totally fit into that and remained somewhere in my subconsciousness so I play some of their older stuff time from time.

Or I found an old cd with mp3's I burned years ago while at the college, played in in a car and it was New Order, I always was a fan of Joy Division but never listened to New Order, now it got hooked me too.

Or I watch an old French movie and there's a major Rock n Roll going on - it's Billy Halliday so I go and check a lot of stuff from Billy Holliday because he has great voice and he was THE French Elvis.

Or I am looking for McCoy Tyner - the famous jazz pianist who played with John Coltrane and I was looking for some of his big band stuff and then I find on Youtube a song that sounds like anything but McCoy tyner - with totally impressive female vocals so I check and find out it's an 1982 album with Phyllis Hyman on it, so I go and check Phyllis Hyman, read her bio etc. and can't believe I didn't know her before..

Every good piece of music has its own history, atmosphere, vibe I like to read a lot about the music I listen to so I can feel it as much as possible.
