Google's ANSWER HIGHLIGHTING feature

This might fuck up traffic for reference sites. Would make SHALLOW searching the new standard...

http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2010/...arch-more.html

Google Squared is one of our early efforts to automatically identify and extract structured data from across the Internet. We've been making progress, and today the research behind Google Squared is, for the first time, making search better for everyone with a new feature called "answer highlighting."

Answer highlighting helps you get to information more quickly by seeking out and bolding the likely answer to your question right in search results. The feature is meant for searches with factual answers, such as [meet john doe director], [john lennon died], or [what was the political party of president ford]. If the pages returned for these queries contain a simple answer, the search snippet will more often include the relevant text and bold it for easy reference.

I wonder if the NOARCHIVE meta would affect this. Some sites use this so that protected content is indexed by Google, but to actually view the entire page you need to subscribe or register.

I guess not, since NOARCHIVE really just means that Google can't offer the cached version...

Less click throughs and higher conversions.

The surfers that do land on your page want to be there, less bounce, more page views, more click thrus (once on page) and higher conversions.

True, but for those fact based sites it's about volume and ad clicks/impressions... This will hurt their bottom line if implemented.

I wouldn't think it will have a massive impact, how many complete answers are you going to get in 2 lines of google's search results per site?

Should see better traffic from it though.

wherecaniseehornymilfs.com available, add to cart...

I wouldnt be too quick to think that it automatically will mean less GOOD clicks. Probably less unproductive ones.. If I want to know [political party of gerald ford], then it's PROBABLY all I wanted to know whether I clicked to your site and searched for 10 minutes for the answer, or if it showed up in the results highlighted.

If the ultimate goal is to sell a product that the surfer wants, then answer highlighting is unlikely to be an issue... it's not like they can buy the product directly from the results page.

If you're providing generic information and hoping that on-page advertising catches their eye (with the ads possibly unrelated to the specific information they're searching for) then it may hurt more...

This doesn't have any effect on adult entertainment. Who Googles a question in the quest for porn?
