US privacy laws - archived whois?
hi
i've got a domain that i didn't have whois privacy on for a few months by mistake, and a few whois archive sites had my old whois info displayed before it was privacy protected again. most of these removed it when i sent them a nice email, but one site doesn't reply to my emails, i even offered him $50 paypal as a gesture, to cover his time doing it. my question is are there any US privacy laws that cover this that i can mention to him when i ring him to request that he removes it, seeing as the whois is now protected? thanks in advance |

Hmmm... remember that it's still a public database, regardless of whether the registrar offers "privacy"
If it ever went further I'd be looking at whether they have the right to indefinitely archive what is probably a copyrighted database. |

ok guys thanks, i did notice that he has a small screen cap of the site on the page as well, is that a copyright violation or fair usage?
i notice that his hosting has a strict no adult usage, and the screen cap and some of the text on the page might be enough for his hosting to get upset. i may use that as a last resort. |

Interesting to see this post here, I was just wondering about the same issue today. I doubt there is much you can do legally, but I am really surprised that you are not hearing back. Might be a dead email address. Have you tried looking up HIS whois and finding alternate contact info?

another reason to use fake names when registering domains, doesn't cost anything extra either
I've seen privacy fail before too now I would use different pseudonyms on every domain, that way your domains can not be easily linked to each other, and your real name is never linked to the domains when you least expect it either |

why would they care? what if you are buying the domain for a friend or relative? there is no rule that says the credit card that is paying the bill has to be the owner of the domain
