Why do many spell checks think internet should be capitalized ?

I don't know anybody outside of the spell check programs that write internet with a capital 'I'. I am assuming that somewhere somehow decided it was an actual place like London or Italy?

It is supposed to be when referring to the world wide web, or whatever you want to call it.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/internet

If you use it in reference to a private network then it does not need to be capitalized. Don't ask me why.

internet networking
(Note: not capitalised) Any set of networks interconnected with routers. The Internet is the biggest example of an internet.

Because it's "The" Internet. Not just "an" internet.

Bingo!

On a side note when you type the word net for Internet, it should be 'net.

It's the same as our moon, which is referred to as 'The Moon'. Yet when we talk about Mars' moons we don't use a capital letter.

"The Internet" is the main one, anything else is still an internet, just not the big one.

"An entity" implies there are more than one. "The Entity" would refer to the predominately accepted entity version of the entities available to choose from.

"Hey dude, my god is different from your god."
"Blasphemer! There is only One God!"
"You're a psycho dude."

Proper nouns (also called proper names) are nouns representing unique entities (such as London, Jupiter or Johnny), as distinguished from common nouns which describe a class of entities (such as city, planet or person).[8] Proper nouns are not normally preceded by an article or other limiting modifier (such as any or some), and are used to denote a particular person, place, or thing without regard to any descriptive meaning the word or phrase may have.

Well, I suppose that does make sense. I can't say I am going to be switching the way I do it any time soon though.
