Google Android OR Iphone....who will win as the future media platform? (Discuss)

I mean i LOVED my Iphone, still kind of do, but would replace it with a Google phone in a second!

I don?t like the restricted environment and that someone control what i can and can?t have on there.....which they can by sending out blocks, updates and the likes

Your thoughts

For the average consumer or for techies?

Sadly the average consumer doesn't give a fuck about openness. And they are the ones who will dictate the direction the market goes in and what platforms will thrive.

There is certainly room for both.

But of course you could always dismiss the 44 million iPhones sold as nothing but Apple fanboys who will buy anything Apple. Or you can recognize that consumers like closed controlled systems.

Its more then 44 mill now and just for the record android was not in the running when the Iphone was at its peek

Personally i think the Google phones wont just win but simply CRUSH the Iphones eventually.

They are both great phones though...

http://www.wired.com/images_blogs/ga...comparison.jpg

Uphill battle on their hands. Considering the Nexus One was the much hyped one true "Google" phone that their engineers had their hands in.

I personally have no horse in the race. I've had a Blackberry for 6 years and besides flirting with the Nokia N95 8gb for about 2 weeks I haven't strayed from this platform. All about the keyboard, ease of use, and email for me....no use for Apps on a device this small. (with the exception of a Wordpress Client and Pandora)

you do realize open and well licienced os with fundamentally better developer support results in more application FOR average consumers.

remember the apple vs dos/windows 3.11 arguements

history will repeat itself in this one too.

We will see. I do not remember Apple having this huge of a lead in the PC war back in the day. The you have to remember the IBM factor. I also can not say that the dos/windows machines were ever much better then Apple.

Then add in that you pretty much just spew biased crap, I have to go with the iPhone.

I cannot stand apple shit, never have and never will. Especially after my latest non-apple purchases, a HP CQ61 and now a HTC Hero. Fucking AWESOME.

You do realize that this is NOT 1990?

Again. I will allow you guys to speculate and I'll just post the facts.

Over 140,000 Apps to date with 2 billion downloads. Developers may whine about the limited API or the secretive approval process but nothing suggests that they are abandoning the platform anytime soon.

What do you suppose is going to happen when the iPhone hits Verizon's new high speed network? Or when they open up the phone to other U.S carriers? I'm guessing they hit the 100 million iPhone mark a lot sooner than most people think.

The funny thing is that news like this

http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/02/n...es-multitouch/

Which everyone seems to be pretty excited about would be ridiculed if it came out of Apple.

Seriously...enabling multi-touch is huge news?

Better doesnt always win....

How many Google phones have they sold in the first month?

They are still releasing the Iphone in different countries around the world each month...wheres the google line at the T-Mobile store?

Hype is more important in todays economy then open source.

They are supposedly dancing around an Apple held patent.

I'm an Android user and lover. It's not as "open" as everyone thinks. Each manufacturer can make non kernel changes are aren't required to release them to the public. Samsung has been especially reluctant to release anything (even the code the are required) to the public.

People will soon realize that when apple removes a cool app because some tree hugging whine baby complains about it, it will suck. Then they'll wish for a phone with Android since it's open.

I don't know why google doesn't put a link to their phone on their main search page. That would pretty much tell 80% of internet buyers about it.

Or you could dismiss the fact that the iphone was out nearly a year and a half before the first android powered phone which was mediocre at best (the G1). Apple was the first in the new smartphone market. They had no competition. When you beat everyone to market you have a distinct advantage.

I have owned two iphones and now own a droid. The difference between the two is staggering. I'll personally never go back to an iphone when a better Android powered alternative exists.

Feature #1 for the Android powered phones - NO iTunes!!!

I like android because its a mix between windows mobile productivity, iPhone's smooth interface, and the ease of Nokia programming. Apps are easy to build so its highly customizable....

You hit it on the head. Apple is repeating the same mistakes they made with the Mac. They were light years ahead of pcs but kept their system closed. It will take Google a while but they will be tops before too long.

You can add tons of stuff just have to jailbreak it ;)

Restricted environments make way more money then open environments...

And your jailbreaks are gone after the next update....jailbreaks are for geeks, and guess what they will be using in the future

But lets see

i had an iphone, i loved it, sent it out to get custom painted, etc. I went to the verizon store, held the HTC Eris and have been hooked ever since. I sold my iphone in a heartbeat to get flawless service on a multi-tasking platform. droid > Iphone IMO

If you surveyed 1000 random people majority of them wouldnt even know what android or nexus one was.

I think the iphone will win over the long term for the average consumer, it already has a huge amount of apps and its only going to get bigger.

My G1 still beats the shit out of every iPiece I've ever seen. Android > Apple, 24/7/365 - unless you're a diehard Apple user, in which case paying way too much for your average electronics is the same old song and dance for you.

sad part is the majority of people in the thread havent had the ability to test both at the same time. Having to exit a program only to send a text message on my iphone was enough reason for me to get rid of it within itself. Not to mention, the phone is only as good as the service will allow it to be.

If a phone (hardware part) costs more than $30 bucks, it's too much.
If the plan costs more than $40 a month, it's too much.

I'll stick with my cheap shitty phone that makes perfectly good phone calls.
I have computers that do, you know, computing and emailing and web browsing and stuff.

I absolutely love my iphone and would not trade it for anything in the world

Yes i speak from experience I also have the nexus1 here on my desk for mobile development only..

Droid is nice and does a few cool things but in my opinion it just isn't up to par with the Iphone...

Again just my opinion and I see im in the minority on this opinion..

Secondly...

I totally agree with everyone else here that android will sometime in the future take over Iphone market share because of the more open system..

When I say Iphone for me im just stating I like it better not that it will win the war in the mobile market..

To me this is like the Canon vs Nikon .... PC vs Mac debates... You will have loyalists on all three sides.

I believe this thread says it all .. iPhone, Android , Windows7 Phone .... everyone else becomes a hardware manufacturer or application developer .. I could care less who is perceived to have the "best" system... what matters is that we are positioned to capitalize on these three.

The future smart phone operating system market will look a whole lot like the Instant Messenger market. There will be several big players but we would all be better off if there was 1 dominant player and someone constantly chasing them to keep them on their toes.

One thing is for sure, MS and Goog will stay in the fight even if they never profit a dollar from it.

I have both an Iphone and a Motorold Droid and from using them both in two different countries for the last year , I have to say that I am leaning towards the Android based phone now. I had two different blackberry's before and they're not even in the same league as these two phones.

I love people that have the argument about how Blackberry's are business phones and they need them for email , Maybe like 5 years ago you needed a Blackberry to get your emails but there isn't a site or function that an Iphone or Droid can't do now (and most of the time better)

The Iphones interface is simple and easy to use but it's alot slower compared to the Droid I find,For the argument that Apple has so many million apps , it does have way more apps then Droid but all the real apps that you will need are available on the Droid too, 99% of the apps out there are stupid (strobe light , dog whistles , dumb games) anyways.

Same here. Most of my email checking has been on my Droid over the last 2 months.

Beat everyone to market? Smart phones are nothing new. I had a Blackberry circa 2002. I know others who had Palm powered Sprint phones prior to that.

The "new smartphone market"? And this is defined by what? I'm assuming the game changing iPhone?

I'm not really getting your argument. Seems like you're admitting the iPhone defined the market but in the very next breath you're saying that they beat everyone to the market they created? Your argument is circular.

Just admit it...you hate the iPhone?

Android all the way. I design android themes. A lot more control on the looks, opposed to the iPhones simplistic OS.

I am happy to see so many people talking up their Android phones. I am a long time Sprint user and was just about to purchase a new smart phone. I looked at the Samsung Moment, an Android OS phone to use with the Sprint service that I am happy with and I the liked interface and snappiness of it, and it's slide out keyboard for texting, the web browser and the apps.

I have the G1 and I don't really like it that much- the camera really sucks. It is the most expensive phone I have ever had and the worst camera I have ever had. The internet seems just as fast as it does on the IPhone but the apps aren't as good. There is a newer google phone (i can't remember if its the G2 or G3) and it looks slightly better than the G1... I'm still not sure what I should do. My contract is up soon and I don't know if I should stick with an android phone or not. I heard the Motorola Click phone is really good- and I believe it is still an android phone.
