Ah Fuck I give up.. I have really and truly had enough

What with all the shit Iv had with my sites over the past couple of months now I have problems with my car. Its throwing out white smoke. Had a compression test done and that was fine The mechanic is kinda baffled as to what the hell is causing it. Its not over heating there is no craked head, the valves and rings are fine as is the head gasket so he says. Another day in the garage with more hours looking to find the problem means more money for him

Just more expense and more fucking hassle. Iv realy had enough

Its from the exhaust The mechanic has done compression tests and they were fine. The oil is also not milky. He assures me its not the gasket, or cyclinder head he thinks it might actually be from running the car to lean which has damaged the cat

possible, what kind of car is it?

If its from the exhaust it shouldnt have anythign to do with heads.

Im no certified mechanic, but i dont think running lean would cause a white smoke. THats 98% oil issue. Meaning cylinders most likely. But you say the compression is fine.... hrmmm....

no clue without witnessing things myself

Its a 2L Celica GT-R

Yep this is why he cant understand whats causing it. He said the only other things could be transmisson oil geting into something or where Iv been running the car to lean its knackerd the cat. Its not losing water and the engine runs sweet with no knocks. Before he done the compression tests and had a look at the head he thought it was a blown gasket or cracked cylinders too... he is 99% sure its not

That's not correct, you can have a head gasket leak that leaks in coolant and/or oil into your cylinders which would put all the smoke out the ass end of your car...

Does the smoke smell at all? It could be that a coolant channel is leaking into the head... or oil... a small leak will barely be noticeable on a compression test... a small leak can be within the boundaries of "ok"... White smoke is usually a coolant problem so I can almost guarantee you have a head gasket leak... it's probably just a small one. A tiny bit of coolant makes an enormous amount of smoke :P

Anyway, may I suggest a new mechanic? He should have tracked down the issue by now.

Automatic transmission fluid smokes white/light blue.
Check your transmission fluid level, if it's low suspect the shift vacuum module.
The module can tear inside and siphon your automatic transmission fluid from the case as a vapor into your intake manifold.
You can check it by pulling the vacuum line off of it and see if there is any transmission fluid in it.

If its anything to do with the cat he said it would cost around £200.00 around ($400) to fix plus the labour which is no problem. If it turns out to be something else and its gonna cost over £1000 I wont bother getting it fixed I will just sell the car for spares or repairs and get another celica

That's what I hate about new cars. Old cars, pre computers, pre fuel injection, I can figure out almost anything on my own. On the buick I know what things are, I know where things are, and I know when someone is bullshitting me.

With the Navigator I open the hood and I can hardly find anything. It drives me absolutely up the wall. Something's always wrong with it and the dealership is always trying to fuck me. UGH!

I feel your pain. My gut says to check the head gaskets but I have no idea where they are located or what would need to be removed to make that happen, so you probably don't want to invest the labor just on a hunch. The majority of my auto exp comes from cars over 50 years old so may be completely irrelevant anyway, but they can start to go bad w/o being completely blown.

That's my two cents, sorry if it's not much help.

Also if you want to make sure what it's burning put your hand in the exhaust smoke for a few seconds and then smell it. That may sound a little archaic, but you should be able to tell for sure if it's oil.

Smoke that is pure white usually means water is getting in a cylinder. When does it smoke, at start up or idle or under acceleration or all the time? Also does the smoke smell sweet like warm maple syrup? If so it's definitely coolant and most likely the head gasket.

I think its more of a white-greyish smoke but the mechanic said it was more of a white - bluey smoke

You can check it by pulling the vacuum line off of it and see if there is any transmission fluid in it.
Beat me to it.

Yeah do what Helix said, I had a Pontiac one time that was getting trans fluid into the engine, it smoked quite a bit until my uncle fixed it. He knew right what the problem was.

general rules for smoke -

white means coolant leak somewhere, into the combustion chamber. Usually a cracked head or a bad head gasket.

grey or blue-grey means oil is getting into the combustion chamber, either past the piston rings or thru the valve guides.

black means the air/fuel mixture is 'too rich'; meaning its getting too much fuel

You'd be amazed at how many experts we have here... that cover pretty much anything you can imagine... it's kind of hilarious. No wonder there's no money in porn... these experts are too busy trying to solve everyone else's problems....

DUMP your mechanic, he should be charging you a flat rate to diagnose the problem. If he needs to spend more than one day diagnosing white smoke, (which can only be one of several problems) then he is incompetent and/or taking you for a ride.

Oil will never create white smoke, either way he should have performed a leak down test.

If you don't have general automotive knowledge then you aren't a man.

its going to sound a bit silly but have recently changed your oil and filter? or added oil? if so drain it and replace the filter too..then make sure its filled to the proper level (checked on level ground with a warm engine) and not overfilled...too much oil in the pan can result in heavy white smoke. it could be this simple, I have seen this happen several times.
