Yes and no..

The ozzy years with Sabbath were from 70 to 79. Most people refer to Sabbath from that original lineup. Before that, they were a blues band called Earth. In 70, they released their first record called Black Sabbath and last ozzy album is never Say Die released in 79.

In 80, they released the first Dio record and I have to say it was also a good album.

PS: all this to say that yes, the 70s is the decade of Rock genius.

I'm violently opposed to all Sabbath involving Ronnie James Dio. Ozzy Sabbath is the "Only!" Sabbath, ( in my opinion )

Yeah don't forget Edger Winter, James Gang all good stuff

So a question is, while I would consider Iron Butterfly a 60's band as that was when they were formed and had their one and only hit. Consider Led Zeppelin, who is widely considered a 70's band. However, they also formed in the 60's and also had a small hit with 'Whole Lotta Love'

Which is the correct?

Zeppelin is 70's... IB is 60s.

Good call..... I consider them multi-awesome.

They span decades, like many others.... Ozzy, Sabbath, Stones, etc.... Tough to confine them to one era. Masters, of course....

Cream - definitely a 60's band. (debut in '66)

More 70's:
Van Halen (debut album in 78, VH II is '79)
Queen -- put out 8 albums before 1980 starting in '73
Rush -- put out their first 7 albums in the 70's, debuted in '74
Supertramp - Debuted in 1970, put out 6 albums before 1980 (most of their best work)

Most ultimate band of the 70's for me personally - Thin Lizzy

Starting with 1975 Fighting till 1979 Black rose that was a major streak of albums that all have my very own hall of fame status.

What they recorded before and after never had the complex feeling anymore.

I played them just yesterday and thought I must get sick after all those years - it still worked.

Aerosmith's song "Dream on" was an absolute anthem through the 70's.

Fleetwood Mac
Genesis
Jethro Tull
Grand Funk

I was going to say Hawkwind but am never sure about anyone other than myself knowing who they are. You're a true classic rock fan Carlos.

I'll add UFO to that list.

HEART -- debuted in 75-76, put out first 4 albums before 1980.

Thanks man, I sure appreciate the compliment when it's from you.

One essential huge name from the 70's still missing:

Mr Vincent Furnier from Detroit

His last albums are actually very much underestimated - superbly gifted songwriter.

Another one who made his mark in the 70's although with 60's roots, Rory Gallagher:

He was always like the Irish Johnny Winter for me.

I don't know how well known he is these days though, not many kids listened to Rory around here.

You need to move Cream to the 60's.

For the 70's you can add Mott the Hoople and Frijid Pink.
