Hurt Locker wins best picture

Seriously? I cannot believe it also won for editing and screenplay. Did anyone watch this movie? There WAS no screenplay. It was just a team of soldiers looking to disarm bombs and thats pretty much it. The rest in between was filler. No back story on the characters, so it was hard to feel for them. No explanation as to why they are in a certain place, they are just all the sudden there and you have no idea why. They didnt even end the shootout scene in the desert. You just have to assume everyone of the bad guys was killed and soldiers ended up back at base safe. The action scenes were nice and tense and the acting was decent, everything else was a mess. The Blindside and Avatar were worlds better.

I never even flinched when that bomb guy couldn't get that Iraqi out of the bomb in the middle of the street.

Was a cool army type movie... that's about it.

I was thinking the same thing, how did this movie win? Saw it last week after everyone was talking about it, I was not impressed at all. I thought Avatar should have won.

After spending 6 years in the Army, I know Hurt Locker captured a lot of unspoken feelings that are common to most GIs. The scene in the grocerystore looking at cereal illustrates the disconnect many returning vets feel after being in a combatzone just days earlier.

Bravo! I think the right film won.

Avatar was very pretty and a SF rewrite of the Pocohantas story.

Nothing new besides the technology. If the movie had been 2D only, I think it would have had only average box office receipts.

With all due respect to the men and women of the armed forces, Hurt Locker brought nothing new either. In fact, there have been way more films like it than like Avatar by far.

A lot of people don't understand this, including the OP, but the movie is summed up by that scene in the grocery store near the end.

Avatar was nothing but Dances With Wolves in space, the special effects were amazing, but the story was shit and the acting was mediocre at best. Take out the the 3d effects and amazing computer generated graphics and what do you have? A b grade movie at best.

The only thing the Blindside has going for it, is its a true story, embellished in the movie but true story. Best picture? No, honestly shouldn't even be a nominee, there is nothing that separates it from any other sports driven feel good movie. It belongs on Lifetime channels Sunday night movie

This is what Moore had to say about it:

Some critics have hailed "The Hurt Locker" because the film "doesn't take sides" in the Iraq War -- like that's an admirable thing! I wonder if there were critics during the Civil War that hailed plays or books for being "balanced" about slavery, or if there were those who praised films during World War II for "not taking sides?" I keep reading that the reason Iraq War films haven't done well at the box office is because they've been partisan (meaning anti-war).

The truth is "The Hurt Locker" is very political. It says the war is stupid and senseless and insane. It makes us consider why we have an army where people actually volunteer to do this. That's why the right wing has attacked the movie. They're not stupid -- they know what Kathryn Bigelow is up to. No one leaves this movie thinking, "Whoopee! Let's keep these wars going another 7 years!"

James Cameron has been targeted by the crazy right, too. Because -- and Fox and Rush have this one correct, too -- "Avatar" is, in fact, an allegory for America -- a land stolen from an indigenous people who were slaughtered, a nation that not only allows corporations to call the shots but let's them privatize our wars (wars in distant places with the objective of controlling a dwindling energy resource), and a people who seem hell-bent on destroying the environment.

Cameron is a brave and bold filmmaker, a college drop-out who became a truck driver and then one day just decided he was going to make movies. "Avatar" is an idea he's had in his head since he was a teenager -- and somewhere, somehow, his dreams and creativity weren't snuffed out by the machine.

I get that but the Hurt Locker was just another typical war movie, and not even that good of one. Think of the great ones like Platoon, FMJ, Blackhawk Down etc...they all had solid character development where you got to know and feel for these guys. Hurt Locker had none of that. It was just a bunch of soldiers going from mission to mission with no set up as to why they are there and they were all the same, disarm a bomb before it blows. It got old after the second one. I wouldnt even put it in the top 25 war movies of all time.

love that film but it has almost zero character development.

perhaps hurt locker connects better with people who have experienced it. haven't seen it myself but most of the films were weak when it came to best picture nominations. District 9 was far better than Avatar. Blindside... might as well nominate We Are The Titans and The Bad News Bears. Inglourious Bastards??? It was a crap year.

I missed the Oscars. Wow, Avatar didn't win best picture? What a slap in the face to James Cameron. Honestly, I thought Avatar was boring as hell, but America seems to have loved it.

Its a good movie but not great by any stretch.
Sector 9 was by far the most original film of the lot and IMO the best but it didnt get shit.
Avatar was good but also derivative as someone else posted, nothing really original except the effects.

This is why the oscars suck.

They have a holier than thou attitude towards films which denies alot of better, more original movies.
Then they have their "tribute to horror," what a fucking joke since they rarely ever have a horror film in the top running. It's like they were saying "There, we gave horror films 3 minutes of screen time, now shut up!"

District 9 was by far the best movie of the year. Great original story, very well acted and it actually made you think. One of the better scifi movies ever made...

If you have not seen it yet, watch it.

in a perfect world, district 9 would have won hands down. it's not the best movie made this year, but it's the best one that was nominated, by far.

I'm a little embarassed to say that out of the 10 films nominated (10?!?!) I have only seen District 9 (ok) and Inglorious Basterds (some amazing acting performances). Blind Side, Precious, An Education...I have ZERO desire to watch. Up, Serious Man, Up In The Air and Avatar I would like to give a look, and maybe Hurt Locker I will just cause it won to see what the fuss is about it, but this seems like a year that people will not really remember the winner.

Bravo! I think the right film won.
Exactly why it won...

I love the movie Saving Private Ryan, i love Black Hawk Down, but neither illustrate in any detail what is going on in the minds of the soldier the way that hurt locker seems to with its lead character.

I wouldn't characterize this as an anti war movie in the least.. did you guys even watch the whole thing? Just a well described story of a soldier who isn't made out to be an over the top perfect hero like so many other movies seem to be filled with.

What an unpleasant surprise! It was a good movie but not an Oscar movie. And the show was not as good as last year's show. Too bad.

I felt for District 9. Avatar came in and fucking crushed it in all categories it had a chance of pulling an award in. It makes you wish the judges factored budget into the equasion. I don't know about best movie, but for an independant production District 9's effects were amazing.
