ice fishing this time of year?

One of my buddies is a professor at a university and has spring break off next week. We came up with an idea of going ice fishing. Any places to go this time of year? Montana? Michigan? North Dakota?

Never done this before looking for tips from the Friday night GFY crowd!

I have no idea I'm researching this at a big ice fishing BBS right now (iceshanty.com). Never been ice fishing before, neither has my friend. I'm not sure if we will be able to find a good, safe place being newbies lol

http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/climate/...cag3/cag3.html is providing some interesting data so I can see trends of what parts of the country have been colder than usual in February so there is thicker ice later into the year, and comparing that to the historically coldest cities. The weather.com monthly temperature/precip charts are very useful. Safety is top priority.

Got a good place.

Devil's Lake, North Dakota.

Everything I need right there. Considered pretty safe ice up until maybe the last week of March.
