US Lawmakers Want National ID Card

http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/201...tories+2%29%29

Lawmakers are proposing a national identification card ? what they?re calling ?high-tech, fraud-proof Social Security cards? ? that would be required for all employees in the United States.

The proposal by Sen. Charles Schumer (D-New York) and Sen. Lindsay Graham (R-South Carolina) comes as the states are grappling to produce another national identification card at the behest of the Department of Homeland Security. Virtually none of the states are in compliance with this Real ID program ? adopted in 2005 ? requiring state motor vehicle bureaus to obtain and internally scan and store personal information like Social Security cards and birth certificates for a national database.

Amazing the things you can pass when you use Sept 11 as an excuse. Maybe they should try terrorism on their own people people more often.

This has been in the works for a while now. They already are putting RFID chips in passports.

no
it's an improved social security card that can't be couterfited, or at least it would be harder. Versus the piece of paper you have now.

it won't be tied to a database anywhere just host the info about you and will be hard to rig, presumably.

My boyfriend went to a staffing agency recently and they wanted to see his passport, social security card and state issued id before they'd even consider him

its quite convinient actually. You just need to carry it to perform all your day to day operations. Cops are happy to see it if they stop you on the road, banks are recognizing it and provide you access to your account, government agencies accept it too. And, you can vote online, and sign documents electronically from home without going anywhere.

They have to do something about impersonation and currently it is fairly easy for someone to steal your identity. I had some jerkoff use my SS # to get a job and they came after me for the taxes in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Seriously, I was arrested for "Failure to pay city income taxes" because someone used my SS# to get a job. This was in 2002. I had to pay $750 to get out and even though I proved that I never worked there the city kept my money.

I don't understand why there is a card. Why don't they just implant a chip...this way no one can steal the card! We could just go to any job and get scanned...or when cops pull us over they can just scan us. Cards can be lost and put in the hands of criminals...an implant chip would be a much safer bet......for security reasons of course...gotta make us all safe.

Are you fucking serious? You wanna be tagged by the feds with a chip? They'd be able to tell exactly where you were at any time... that's fucking creepy and so much of an invasion of privacy it's not even funny...

LOL. Creepy Indeed!!! It was actually being sarcastic and just making a point of how quickly people will give up their info and privacy to the government in the name of "security or safety". It is a very slippery slope.

We should all have our ID number tattooed on our foreheads.

Everyone here carries an ID card and it's no bother. As in many Euro countries it works fine.

The reality is many countries already have a national ID card, some even have a database of them, others just issue them and have a paper record.

Still in the US people have a unhealthy fear of their government, something common in dictatorships more than in other republics.

Just an observation from outside the borders.

Why wouldn't we have an unhealthy distrust of government? How many innocent women and children have we killed in the past 10 years? Something that we thought Obama was going to stop, however he has ramped it up.

Governments have kidnapped, imprisoned, tortured, murdered more people then any other group in the history of mankind. You call it unhealthy to have a fear toward Governments? We've had it good in the western world for a long time, but it's foolish to think it couldn't happen here. Why couldn't it? Look at the way things are heading now. Most people forget laws are passed to protect the people from the state, but more and more laws are being passed to protect the state from people. This is just another step in the WRONG direction.

I believe lots on the american government to have good intentions, although the ones with the power do not have the best intentions of the people in mind. People are waking up and actually studying I think, history thats why they are questioning the government.

Yep, they'll accept it everywhere.

The US is NOT the rest of the world or any other country. In case anyone hadn't noticed despite our flaws we've done pretty well for ourselves marching to our own drumbeat.

The reason republics remain republics is BECAUSE the people distrust the government. The reason dictatorships become dictatorships is because the people don't distrust the government.

I was picking up what you were throwing down JC

Anyone thinking you cannot be traced to your whereabouts is playing ostrich, the chip wont make any difference, just another convenience for the feds.

Even with your mobile switched off, they can still trace you, unless you remove the battery or put tin foil on your head.

You're absolutely right, but why make it any easier? A cell phone is a choice. A mandated tracking device isn't.

Of course if you try to avoid cell phones and cable TV, consumerism and corporate pay and live off the land and off the grid they'll find a way to brand you insane and a threat to the public safety and throw you in hole for having the temerity to point out that the emperor has no clothes on.
