Any reason for sponosors to make WMV galleries/ why not just Flash gals?

Is there any reason anymore for a sponsor to make WMV galleries in the old crappy format of 3 short clips? Since most sponsors are making FLV clips for legal tube sites and embeds, can't we just do a 1:30 flv embed gallery page?

Do the MGP sites accept gallery pages with one 1:30sec video embedded in the middle of it?

What about just doing a gallery with a single 1:30 wmv?

the purpose of 3 - 4 short clips (15 to 20 sec) of mpg,wmv or whatever back in the day was because people had slow as hell modems (56k) so you needed to break em up so they can download em in less than 10 minutes per clip. Then once the highspeed ISP hit I think it was left this way as a "fuck you join for better viewing" to the surfers, but of course that was before the tubes ;)

I had always done three 15 sec clips or 20 sec clips, and I started getting complaints from affiliates that MGPs need at least 90 seconds per gallery or they won't list. So I will be switching to 90 second galleries, just not sure if I will do one clip or split into 3.

We have been looking into this ourselves and we believe flash hosted galleries are the way ahead. The problem as you have said is getting MGP/TGP sites to accept them and with business down for everyone folk are less inclined to take chances.

I think a minimum clip of 2 minutes would be about right. Also.. the res of the clip should be close to the original. The tube sites at the moment have very poor quality and small res vids so we could at least have an advantage in that dept.

At the moment we are converting all of our vids on our paysite to flash but still giving them the option to download the wmvs.

It would be interesting to hear the opinion of both affiliates and MGP owners on this matter.

We offer both but are moving more towards doing the flash clips so that users can instantly watch the clips.

Full rez would come out to about 52megs per minute, so you would put out a gallery with 104mb file in it or close to it? Hope you have some really cheap BW! lol

It's like going for a jog with a girlfriend. You have to go slow so she can stay on pace with you. The second you start running you will find yourself running alone. We ran for a little bit then realized we were leaving some affiliates behind. I agree the future is not in short wmv multi-clip galleries but some older submitter accounts require it. I dont care what kinda galleries you make as long as they are thumbable in smart thumbs and they are optimized for CTR and Conversions.

I think everyone should be analyzing data of their galleries and seeing which kinds and styles give the best CTR and Conversions and go with them. Oh and its very important to offer both picture and movie galleries oviously.

Pic surfers are here to stay for sure, and for me make for better sales.

Great thread, bump for more discussion. Most of my recomendations to clients have been 1 min to 1 min 30 sec clips in flv, for the galleries. Beware of bandwidth and measure cost vs reward.

I did say "Also.. the res of the clip should be close to the original" I have run a few tests and we output our video at a res of 800 x 450. A 2 min flash video at this res with a bit rate of 1055 using a H.264 codec bats in at 17mb.

A lot of Hi Def sites have trailers on their main pages in excess of 30mb and as far as bandwidth is concerned. Its never been cheaper than it is now. I dont know where you get your figures from..

I think the multiple clips was also intended to frustrate the surfer provoking him to buy.

As far as format I am a firm believer in letting them sample the format for which they are buying.

If you have wmv in the members area, i feel it's a good idea to have them on your gallery, so the customer knows and is sampling exactly what he is going to purchase. (thus eliminating any surprises resulting in a dissatisfied customer)

Flash isn't available for Win XP 64, Win7 64, Windows mobile ... not too mention less common platforms like iPad, it's often crappy performance with Mac and Linux 64, etc.

An unpackaged mpeg4, not wrapped inside a Flash or wmv package, will play
on virtually ANY platform, from WebTV to iPad.

I agree with ya. but what we did with all our existing galleries was make flash versions. Just stream the 3 short clips together as a flv. they are doing really well so far. gives you a nice 1 and half minute video trailer. 3 scenes kind of.

I agree with you also. We just made some new templates based on the designs that had the best CTR.

hmm, how can you play them in a flash based player if the machine has no flash?
