:stoned Conan O'Brien to make TBS his new late-night home

Quote:
NEW YORK ? Late-night mainstay Conan O'Brien is headed to TBS to resume his comedic duties with a talk show expected to debut in November, the network says.

The program will air Mondays through Thursdays at 11 p.m. Eastern, shifting TBS' "Lopez Tonight," starring George Lopez, to midnight.

Monday's surprise announcement hit the same day O'Brien starts a two-month, nationwide comedy tour in Eugene, Ore., amid persistent reports that he was likely to claim Fox as his new late-night home.

Barring Fox, syndication was widely considered O'Brien's most likely option. Few if anyone mentioned TBS as a plausible destination.

O'Brien began serious talks with TBS just last week, the network said.

"In three months, I've gone from network television to Twitter to performing live in theaters, and now I'm headed to basic cable," O'Brien said in a tongue-in-cheek-toned statement. "My plan is working perfectly."

O'Brien left NBC in January after hosting "The Tonight Show" for just eight months, as his ratings plunged from those of his longtime "Tonight" predecessor, Jay Leno, who reclaimed the hour. Until last June, O'Brien had followed Leno as host of "Late Night" since 1993.

OBrien's parting deal bars him from appearing on TV until September.

The Fox affiliates are going to regret not clearing their schedules for Conan. He's going to be pulling good ratings for the next 20 years.

I never thought he would go to cable as that is seen as a pretty big demotion, but he went all in on this one. TBS is probably going to give him plenty of time to build, more than FOX would have given him so that could be the deciding factor.

Does anybody even watch the George Lopez show? I watch TBS every night before bed so I always see the previews. The guests are typically nobody's.

I read in another article George Lopez called him and asked him to come to TBS

O'Brien, 46, entered negotiations with the network last week after Lopez called and asked him to join TBS' late-night lineup. "I can't think of anything better than doing my show with Conan as my lead-in," Lopez said in a statement. "It's the beginning of a new era in late-night comedy"

I read somewhere Lopez pulls about 1.2 million viewers a night right now. I have no idea how. He is so unfunny it makes me physically sick to watch him.

That's good thinking on his part.

Having two of them basically provides job security. If you just had the Lopez, then he would have less time to develop and easier to cut out. Versus them both, long term contracts, and what not.

The network would be making a longer term commitment to the formula.

I found this news on Google News as well. Conan O'Brien moves to TBS. It's always news when someone moves.

Not sure how this benfits Conan. Most people want to watch the 11 PM news. Therefor he's not going to steal any viewers form Leno or Letterman which he needs to do.

It's always news when you post generic statements.

I'm for Team Lo-Co. Lopez is one of the best standups ever!

Good point. It's the whole "big fish in small pond versus small fish in big pond" type of analysis.

Looking forward to this big time. Conan called George to make sure a push to 12 would be ok with him. Read earlier this evening that Mr. Lopez is eager to have the slot after Conan. Conan has tons of momentum now and that's going to help with ratings and guest appearances. Can't wait for it to get started.

As mentioned earlier by someone else in this thread, what probably got Conan to sign on was the whole "I'm gonna help put this network on the map" kind of pioneering angle. It's pretty compelling, actually. If he's able to pull it off, he'd be calling the shots in that network to a large extent.

Yeah, I don't disagree with that, but a major network would have/should have been his starting off point. This is a huge step back... He might as well have taken the 12 o clock slot after the daily show/colbert.
