Anyone here own a Can-Am?

If so, perhaps you can answer a question. Is there a particular reason that they have two wheel in the front as opposed to conventional trikes with two in the rear?

They are advertising these all over the place.

Do the three front wheels make classify it as a car instead of a bike? I thought I read that somewhere a long while back, but am not positive.

I would love to ride one. Wonder what turning at speed is like.

A motorcycle is usually defined as 3 wheels or less regardless of where the solo wheel is located.

I have seen them blast around the Rim of the World, so I suspect with practice you can whip around turns.

As far as how the wheels are set up, I was thinking they may be FWD, but I never stopped to check one out closely (yet).

That's what I had always thought too. But reading something when these first appeared lead me to believe otherwise. I don't believe everything I read on the internet, so it could very well have been wrong...it could be a state to state thing too.

I've been toying with the idea of purchasing a trike of some sort .... Over the last year I have dumped my Road King twice, once in a parking lot and once at a traffic light. I've got a bad left knee that sometimes just doesn't fucking work. Put pressure on it and sometimes nothing is there. Fucked up situation that will get worse not better.

It makes them more stable. I used to own a conventinal trike and this fucker threw me off when I took a corner I ended up with the trike going over my leg and she was a big baby as you can see below. I have also been on runs and seen one flip over when one of the back wheels hit something on the side of the road. The pasenger came off worst

Heres the one I used to own

I feel your pain. Getting the dresser was probably the worst thing I have done as far as my knees are concerned. goodgirl wants to get a trike for herself, but we are leaning towards something like this.

With all due respect, that is hardly conventional . . . at least in the US.

Yes, I've got the RS model.

Reason I've bought it? I can drive it without a motorcycle license in Europe but can still enjoy the feeling of open air riding.

Reason of it having 2 wheels in the front vs. 2 in the back (trike) = more safety, better braking (most traction while braking is in the front of the vehicle).

It handles very well, different than a motorcycle though as you move differently through corners, once your used to it it's natural. I guess you can compare it more to a Snowmobile or a Jet-ski handling wise.

It has quite a few safety features such as: Vehicle Stability System (VSS) that includes ABS, Traction Control and Stability Control.

The built in front trunk (11.6 Gal) is nice for the quick shopping tour or to just carry stuff with you without saddle-bags or a backpack.

It has RWD powered by a belt that leads to a 998cc V-Twin engine made by Rotax that produces 106 hp.

If you are looking for any other info you can probably find it here: http://spyder.brp.com/en-US/General-Info/FAQ.htm or feel free to ask me about it.

Steve

P.S.: I'm not trying to be a biker or whatever, i just enjoy open air rides, but don't feel like taking the time to make a special motorcycle license in the country where I live, so since the Spyder gives me that feeling without the need of a MC license and I like the look / design etc. it was a perfect fit.

lol Its a converted reliant which a lot of bikers used to use over here cause they were so easy to convert. This one was built by NABD http://www.nabd.org.uk/ for a guy that had MS but he found it to hard to use the pedals so I purchased it from him.

You used to see a lot of converted reliant trikes over in the UK on the bike runs and rallys

Snowmobile on wheels... I know someone who bought one and now is trying to sell it or store it until he reach a geriatric age and can't ride his motorcycle anymore.

True for Europe, from what I read / hear in most US states you need a motorcycle endorsement for the Spyder, in California and Delaware you only need a regular motor vehicle license to operate a Spyder.

It's not for everybody I guess. Didn't he get a test ride from his dealer, or why did he change his mind? He had to like it to buy it, I guess?

the S2000 is nice too - always depends on your budget. Also a Boxster is fun to drive.

Nice mods you've made to your Spyder. Is that the phantom body-kit or have you got a paintjob ?

Is that a Corbin Seat or the BRP upgrade?

How do you like the ride and did you get some risers or do you like the factory riding position?

They were pushing them on the cops around here. They let them use them for a short while for free, hoping they would buy some.

I believe the police said they lacked the maneuverability of a real motorcycle (ability drive into areas otherwise inaccessible by a car, through stopped traffic, etc) so they had no use for them.
