I've been able to smell the oil itself for days, smells like hot plastic left out in the sun.

Shit like this is why I oppose creating new off shore wells in the gulf. This has potential to be the greatest oil spill disaster to date.

My friend was actually working on the rig next to the one that blew at the time of the accident, I should post his pics here.

Yeah, many of us have friends in the industry...I have friends who are being helicoptered in and out setting these fires.

Nasty stuff, mankind will kill itself off soon enough.

My wife hadnt gone outside today and I took the baby outside way earlier today and when I came back in (wasnt even outside but maybe 10 mins) I brought the baby inside (i take her for outdoor walks quite a few times a day to get her out) and my wife asked me, "whats that smell in her clothes?" Its the burning oil,... I didnt know and wont take her outside now.

I hadnt noticed the smell yet, its way worse now though.

She wont go outside, its really fucking stinky, it will give you headache quick.

But why is the left wing going ballistic about the arizona law but not making a peep about this in the national media? Seems to me wrecking the entire ecosystem of the Gulf is much worse then sending foreign nationals back home.

its hitting our shores now

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/nati...ce_as_bad.html

The leading edge of a massive oil spill that turns out to be five times worse than expected - and may dwarf the Exxon Valdez disaster - began washing up on Louisiana's fragile coastline Thursday night.

"This is a spill of national significance," Homeland Security chief Janet Napolitano said at the White House, before heading to the Gulf Coast to oversee the crisis response.

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal declared a state of emergency, and President Obama vowed to use "every single resource at our disposal" to help, including the military.

Just went outside to get a reading, it's actually not too bad right now, smells more like chemicals with only a slight sent of burning.

Must depend on the way the winds and tides are going. Monday morning seemed to be the worst. We were driving along the coast with the windows up in Ft. Myers which is a little over 2 hrs south of where we live. It was so strong we thought something must have spilled in the trunk. It didn't occur to us it was the oil until we got home and got out of the car and could really smell it.

I'm less than a mile inland from the gulf, so at the moment considering myself lucky it's not any worse for us right now.

To understand the gravity of the danger facing Louisiana's coast from the oil that began washing ashore Thursday, pollution clean-up veterans offered this starting point: Forget the word "spill."

"This isn't a spill," said Kerry St. Pe, who headed Louisiana's oil spill response team for 23 years. "This isn't a storage tank or a ship with a finite amount of oil that has boundaries. This is much, much worse."

1 well down shouldn't raise prices. People thinking that prices will be raised could affect the market, which in turn could raise prices lol. there are hundreds of rigs out there, not to mention all of the oil we import.

I heard an "expert in containment" interviewed this morning that claimed the rig should have been allowed to burn as it would still be burning off much of the oil that is now being pumped into the ocean. He also said that it was the firefighting boats that so heavily flooded the rig that caused it to sink. Maybe truth...maybe not...but both points do have some logic when one thinks about it.

He also stated that atempting to burn the oil at sea would have little affect and attempts to skim would have little affect. He went on to say that an attempt to seal it with underwater vehicles would fail. He stated that the only viable way to seal it off would be to put in place another rig and slant drill into the shaft of the destroyed rig and pump material into it to seal it off. He said this would take a minimum of three months or longer.

I wish we would get off of oil as well. But how can someone who uses products made from oil a thousand times a day say "the greed of oil". Until you boycott everything made from oil how can you bitch about something that your life would be turned up side down with out. As much as we want to get off of it, we are a long ways from that becoming a reality... greed of oil lol.

BP is guilty of Eco-Terrorism, the CEO should be tried in a court of law and executed.

If that happened I guarantee you these fucking douchebag oil companies would get their shit together quickly and no longer be the negligent cocksuckers they are now.

Yes oil is a necessity, but not like this.

We are talking about-
a)10 dead workers
b)1 destroyed oil rig that is gushing incredible amounts of oil into the ocean
c)1000's of marine life killed
d)loss of jobs and livelihood for local fishermen and related companies
e)probable health hazard to local population
f)certain huge ripple effect throughout the US, probably the world

If you "spill" some water in your home there is a known amount to clean up. If a water pipe bursts and runs for 3 months your house is trashed. It needs major reconstruction.

How the fuck do you reconstruct the Gulf?

Drilling should only be allowed if you are capable of immediately dealing with a worst case scenario.

Many rigs have remote shut off, but ya know, those cost money, and well, BP can afford 500k a day for the rig, but shut offs cost too much. The rig that blew did not have a shut off.

5000 barrels of oil are spilling into the Gulf of Mexico...if I can catch & resell only 10 a day I'm golden.

At about $85 bucks a barrel it's a good deal.

PLUS I can bill the govt. for the cleanup and deduct the depreciation and fuel I use on the boat on my taxes.

And when it reaches the beach I'll go to home depot and buy some trash cans so I can pick it up with them and haul it home in my F150.

Not really BP's fault.. the government should make it compulsory. Any business will aim to save $$ if they can. But the oil companies have got a lot of lobbyists, the marine life none.

Not to mention, if they didnt think they were to be held liable for it, they wouldnt be coming out with press releases today saying the following:

http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE63T2VX20100430

Quote:
BP Plc will clean up an oil spill from one of its wells in the Gulf of Mexico and compensate those affected, its chief executive said, accepting that the disaster could hit plans to open new areas off the U.S. coast to drilling.

"We are taking full responsibility for the spill and we will clean it up and where people can present legitimate claims for damages we will honor them. We are going to be very, very aggressive in all of that," Tony Hayward told Reuters in an interview on Friday.

That sucks man.
It brings back memories of Iraq for me, when the horizon was on fire, the sky was black and raining oil. The smell is pretty awful.

Hope they get it under control.

They said on the local news last night that it will likely eclipse the Exxon-Valdez spill in severity.

thats the word, and the thing that has me upset is, its nowhere near finished pumping oil and its already turning our coast black, whats this area going to look like in 2 months when its still pumping oil?

we live right on the bayou down here, the waterways run right past some of my family homes, its going to be sad for a long time.

here is where family is

Of course, this is the swamp. ;) Technically though, gators wont be right there, they like more marshy areas like swampy ponds, shallow water, this is a deep waterway, tons of tug boats pushing barges going up and down, people skiing, jet skis etdc, that scared the gators away long ago, they dont come around the park.

I thought it had a shut-off but it failed?

Yeah I saw also that the emergency shut-off valve (whatever name they call it in oil speak) had failed and it should have clamped it shut as soon as the incident occured. They sent down a robot sub to try to make it activate but it failed to do so.

It's unthinkable that anyone would be allowed to drill on the sea floor without redundant emergency shut off's. But there ya go. Hard to predict the unknown I guess.

Ok, I have read that BPs claims of back up valves are too expensive.

Quote:
Early investigations have revealed that BP did not bother to install -- and that U.S. regulations do not require -- a backup device to provide another layer of protection in case the "fail-safe" shutoff valve failed (which is exactly what happened). Brazil requires such a device, and oil companies like Shell install it routinely even in the U.S. BP didn't because, at $500,000, it was "too expensive."
