Next step is 6 core. Hell I just recently upgraded from P4 to dual-core. I'm not even sure what I would use a Quad core for let alone more than that.

Wait, the new intel chip is going to be a 6 core beast.
The core i chips are amazing but at this point you might as well wait a few more months.

I bought a new desktop and laptop in late February with Dell for both because my previous ones never gave me trouble and I could use some of my AMEX rewards points for Dell Dollars.

Desktop - Studio XPS 9000
Intel® Core? i7-920 processor(8MB L3 Cache, 2.66GHz)
9GB DDR3 SDRAM at 1066MHz - 6 DIMMs
750GB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive

Laptop - Studio XPS 16
Intel® Core? i7-720QM Quad Core Processor 1.6GHz (2.8GHz Turbo Mode, 6MB Cache)
6GB Shared Dual Channel DDR3 at 1333MHz
500GB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive

Compared to what I had been using, they scream for me.

It's always been that way. Since I don't buy often I usually got for newer (not newest necessarily) so that at least it's somewhat current for a day or two.

Really it's hard to decide. You are always going to get outdated sooner or later. I run an i7, it is a dream to run. But sure, in another year or two I'll most likely drop another 2k and upgrade to another beast system. But this one is serving me very well.

They are always evolving, buying an expensive one once it's out on the market seems like a waste of money!

I run a regular quad with 4gb ddr3. No i7 but I don't think I'll upgrade for atleast 1-2 years.

I've already had one for the last 2 months.

not only is it 6core, but its 32nmm, so its faster clock for clock than the 45nm i7(4core).

Some people say they wouldn't know what to do with that, and that's fine. I run an animation business and render hundreds of frames(sometimes thousands), so if Intel made a 128core CPU, I'd still find a way to abuse it.

I was reading some pretty interesting shit recently about Moore's law and how CPUs are about to reach a point where they won't be able to build them any smaller because of the laws of physics (electrons jumping across things, etc.)

we are already kinda there, that's why everyone is increasing the number of cores, not the frequency...

I got the mac Book pro i7 17 inch. Its fast. I use it for processing pics and photo shop applications 5-7 days a week. The speed is good. The uni-body is pretty bad ass. It is replacing my 2.16intel core duo 17 inch Mac Book Pro which i still have incase of any issue i may have or if lost or stolen. I absolutely cannot be down 1 day with out a Mac Book. My business depends on it.

People can say that i payed way too much, but it shaves serious time off of my raw processing and it will never break down or crash. The time i save and the confidence i have in my equipment is priceless!!!

Lol @ saying wait.

Don't wait. By the time you wait, buy, and have it installed in your PC there's going to be another chip released a month later. They pump new CPUs out less than every 3 months.

Why wait?

Also sitting with a intel i7 920 with 6gb ram, works great. I dont see any point upgrading for quite some time.

If you want a stable and clockable system go for the i7 920, it's also getting cheaper.

I'm running an overclocked Intel i7 930, ThermalTake liquid cooled, 6gb ram, fast enough for video applications and gaming. No need to upgrade anytime soon.
