Bringing cars from USA to Canada:

Anyone ever successfully brought a car back from the USA into Canada and had it registered?

any idea the list of requirements? i know small things like daytime running light etc etc.

any idea how long a car can be in Canada for? Lets say it was registered in California to an American and they "borrowed" you the car. Can you drive it past the boarder for months at a time?

i dont see why not. any ideas?

I have done it!

as a Canadian or an American (with a resident visa) you cannot bring a care from the USA without going through the import process not even if you are just borrowing it.

i know there is small things like daytime running lights etc.

was it worth it overall? who has to sign for you to get the car across?

and i guess actually registering it is an entire different ballgame.

Check for warranty validity.

Chrysler voids the warranty in Canada AS WELL AS in the USA : no warranty
GM voids it in Canada
Ford is OK both ways.

Am looking to bring in a 2011 Sonata :
Canada all in : 34 000 K
USA plus all fess : 22 000 K

im not to worried about warranty, but very good info.

the savings imo outdo what the warranty is worth. let me know hot it goes. i am interested in the process.

the savings can be huge, BUT in some cases you can fuck yourself over. i had a buddy bring in a truck years ago and could not get it registered. so he ended up selling it off.

sometimes the cost of getting it up to code can outweigh brings it over.

A year ago that may have been true w/the exchange rate at 1 to 1.20-1.30
Today hovering around 1 to 1.

the car will be checked out by canada customs and you will have to pay a small fee at the border and fill out some paper work..they will need the original "title" documents..bill of sale etc..

after that you can get a permit on the car and it will have to be safety inspected and "daylight running lights" will have to be setup...there is a list of gov't approved companies that do that..

then you take the documents to your motor vehicle department and insurance company...

the warranty is an issue, you may need a letter form the manufacturer that all recalls have been done..

LOL. Tanker once offered me a job at ICS years ago. I told him there was "no money to be made in porn".

Opps.

There are certain requirements for the exhaust gas and polluting fumes coming out of the car for Canada. The Canadian requirements are about reducing pollution. Check it.

I thought about bringing in an Evo 9, but decided they've all been driven into the ground so fuck that. Then I was going to bring in a 2004 or 2005 GTO, but fuck that, parts take months to get here from Australia, since it's an australian car.

So i bought my skyline instead, and laugh at wanting both of the previous cars :P

You could not have brought in a 2004 - 2005 car :
- it must be either brand new with you as the original title holder
or
- must be more then 25 years ( considered a classic )

I did the classic route with a 57 vette ( that was long long ago .. )

As long as the vehicle is on the Registrar of Imported Vehicles (RIV) you're good to go.

All the info you need is on the RIV page http://www.riv.ca

Note that you can't just show up with it at the border, there's things you need to do before hand.
