FLINT TOWNSHIP, Michigan -- Qwedra Evans wanted Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day to be a good learning experience for her 11-year-old daughter.

But, it ended up getting her fired.

Evens worked as a manager at Check ?n Go on Miller Road until she was terminated after taking her daughter to work with her on April 22 and letting the girl into a restricted area of the business.

Check ?n Go spokesman John Rabenold said Evans was terminated for violating company policy. He said Check ?n Go has a long-standing policy that prohibits employees? friends or family from accessing certain areas of retail stores.

?Unfortunately, Ms. Evans did not ask permission to bring her family member to the store that day and keeping with company policy, that request would have been denied,? Rabenold said in an e-mailed statement. ?Check ?n Go policies are designed to protect its employees and customers in the workplace.?

Evans, who worked for payday lender Check ?n Go for nearly 11 years, said she had participated in the national Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day four previous years working for the company and never had a problem.

"My daughter was sad,? Evans, 29, of Flint, said of Precious Harvey who witnessed the termination. ?I told her, ?Don?t be sad, it?s not your fault.??

Evans acknowledged that she did not ask permission and that she was aware of company policy, but that other bosses in other years had made exception for the special day once a year.

Rabenold said the company?s policies are clear and that employees review them and sign off on them.

He said it?s also not uncommon for companies and corporations to prohibit family members from the workplace.

?Not every job out there is appropriate to bring your kids or family to work,? he said.

A spokesperson for the Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day Foundation based in Elizabeth City, N.Y. said ?absolutely no one? should be fired for participating in the national event that is designed to teach kids about what their parents do during the workday.

?This is totally amazing to me,? George McKecuen said. ?In the 18 years the program has been going, I haven?t ever heard of anyone being terminated for taking her child to work.?

Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day is held on the fourth Thursday in April each year.

An estimated 33 million people nationally participate, including at least 17 million boys and girls at more than 3 million workplaces.

i would have thought she would have a case against them.

i know in the uk that it would not be that easy to sack her, as she had been there for 11 years. unless she had warnings before.

Seems like she will get some publicity and another job at another check cashing place pretty easily.

It's not exactly a retail store. It's a check cashing/loan place. I can definitely see why they would not want family and friends hanging around. Have you ever been to one? Some of them are locked up like Fort Knox.

She shouldn't have taken her daughter in the money area, which it sounds like she did, but if she brought her daughter in the past with no problems then she probably should not have been fired.

they made it sound ridiculous, but there could be more to the story, like the kid got busted for stealing or something... and if I was running a financial institution, I wouldn't really want kids playing around in "restricted areas" either...

unlike the UK, Netherland, and I assume other parts of Europe... Here in the US when you break the company rules/policy you can actually be fired. I've heard it is damn near impossible to fire people in the Netherlands no matter how piss poor their performance is.

She broke the rules, she knew there was rules, she didn't take the 5 mins to get approval, she got canned. /end of story
