Alicia Keys has a voice so big her mother used to say it could "bust through bricks". But right now the New York diva is whispering.

She's talking about how loved up she is with her producer fiancé, Swizz Beatz, 31. And suddenly she's gone from streetwise, 12-Grammy-Award-winning performer into a coy, giggling girl.

"Oh yes," she says dreamily. "I am very much in love. Right now love is my main inspiration. Love is the one thing we all want in our lives and I am completely surrounded by it. Love fills you up in a way nothing else can and it's the most amazing, amazing thing."

It's the first time she's publicly spoken about her feelings for Swizz - real name Kasseem Dean. Until now, Alicia has been tight-lipped about her boyfriend, refusing even to confirm they were an item until last month. At which point it emerged that not only are they a couple, but they are also engaged and expecting their first baby together. She's even considering adopting a child from Africa in the future.

"I'm so looking forward to being a mum," she says. "My mum was the best mum to me. She was my best friend as well as my mum. And I want to be the same to my child."


While she may be incredibly happy now, her relationship with Swizz has been far from easy, which goes some way towards explaining her secrecy. But Alicia has always been very private when it comes to her personal life. Before Swizz, she was said to be dating multi-Grammy-Award-winning producer Kerry 'Krucial' Brothers. She never confirmed the relationship and her silence on her love life even led to speculation about her sexuality.

But by the summer of 2008, the music industry was buzzing with rumours she was dating Swizz, who has worked with stars such as Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg and Whitney Houston.

I grew up around drugs and gangs
There was one problem. Swizz was still married to R&B singer Mashonda Tifrere, the mother of his son Kasseem Dean Jnr, three. Swizz and Mashonda, 29, went their separate ways soon after the rumours began, with a devastated Mashonda posting an open letter online to Alicia saying: "If you are reading this Alicia, let me start by saying you know what you did. You know the role you played. As a woman, I expected so much more from you."

Both Alicia and Swizz have strongly denied that they were together while he was married. In fact, despite regularly being seen at the same events and holidaying together in Hawaii in January, they only admitted they were a couple in May, when they were photographed hand-in-hand following Alicia's sell-out gig at London's O2 arena. Their public outing came just weeks after Swizz's divorce was formalised. Two days later, headlines announced they were planning to marry and expecting a baby. Not exactly music to Mashonda's ears.

But Alicia won't be drawn into discussing her fiancé's ex. She shakes her head: "Oprah Winfrey is the wisest woman I know. She's like my big, clever, older sister. A while ago she gave me one piece of advice which was to never get drawn into talking about that sort of thing. All I know is that right now my life is really, really good."

No wonder she's smiling. At 29, she is a multimillionaire singer (recently performing at the World Cup opening concert in South Africa), an acclaimed actress, and has been named one of the most beautiful women in the world. Meanwhile, her single Empire State of Mind, with Jay-Z, has been a Top 10 single in 15 countries.

I had to be streetwise
But life could easily have been very different. Alicia Keys grew up as Alicia Cook, in the notorious Hell's Kitchen area of New York. Her African dad, Craig Cook, a flight attendant, left her Irish-Italian mother, Terri, a part-time actress and legal secretary, when she was two and from then on she was raised in a tiny one-room apartment by her mother and paternal grandmother, Virgiel.

In person, Alicia is a mix of tough and soft. She won't be pushed into answering questions she doesn't want to, but she's friendly and laughs easily. She's not naturally given to small talk, but she'll happily rave about the rockin' shoes she's wearing.

Given her background though, it's not hard to see why she isn't all that interested in chit-chat. "Growing up for me was tough. I could have gone any way. I grew up around drugs and gangs and I knew kids who got involved in both.


"I was the kid who liked music, who liked acting, but I also liked to be popular with the other kids so I didn't separate myself off. I'd be playing Chopin on the piano for my music lessons and then learning to rap with kids round the block."

She carried a knife to school for protection because that's what all kids did. "You had to be streetwise. At the age of seven I could spot a hustler or someone high on drugs."

And the threat of gang violence was never far away. "When I was about 13 or 14, I was in the street when someone got shot in a gang situation. What was difficult was that in my group of friends, some went the way of gangs and drugs and others didn't. You couldn't blame those that did because we were surrounded by it. It was what they knew, all they knew. I was lucky that I had my mother, my grandmother and my music. I was a tough kid but I didn't want that to be my future. It makes me sad to think that some of my friends had no escape."

I needed to get my life back
To keep her out of trouble, her mother worked two jobs and saved every penny to send her daughter to music and dance classes. Alicia's teachers were astounded by her talent - she was playing classical music on the piano aged seven - and she went on to attend the Manhattan-based Professional Performing Arts School, where she graduated two years early, aged just 16.

She wrote her first song at 14 and won her first recording contract two years later, but it was only when star-maker Clive Davis, who discovered Whitney Houston, took her under his wing that her career really took off. At 18 she started work on Songs In A Minor, the debut album that made her name, won her five Grammys and sold eight million copies worldwide.

Her follow-up album, The Diary of Alicia Keys, was released in 2003 and was even more successful. Alicia had become a bone fide star, followed by paparazzi, and flooded with invitations to fashion shows and parties. Stars including John Mayer and Beyoncé queued up to collaborate with her.

But she found her sudden fame hard to cope with. "I'd gone from being this kid from Harlem to flying round the world first class and working, working, working. It sounds like a dream and in many ways it was, but I got to a point where I couldn't cope."


She turned from sunny-natured to "this horrible, argumentative, unhappy person. I'd fly into rages and I couldn't sleep. I was tired but all the time people around me were talking about the next date in the diary, the next song, the next performance. My diary had no space in it for months on end."

Her part as Georgia Sykes in the film Smokin' Aces followed straight on from the album. Consequently, Alicia found herself falling apart under the pressure.

"I wanted to scream. I was suspicious of so many people around me. I knew people were taking advantage of me and I felt as though I had all these fans all around the world but no one close to me who really cared. I had no balance in my life."

Everything changed a few months later when her beloved grandmother became terminally ill. Alicia put her career on the back burner to nurse her. "I was with her the night she died," she says. "My grandmother was a very spiritual, open-hearted person. We were so close and in fact I look like her and act like her. Losing her made me realise just how much I'd been losing it."

After her grandma died in 2006, Alicia went to Egypt for a month. She sailed down the Nile, wandered around the pyramids and spent time on her own far away from Hollywood, New York and the record industry. It's a period that's been described as her 'breakdown', but Alicia refers to it as a 'breakthrough'. She says: "No one warns you how hard it is to adjust to fame. Things happen, you find yourself becoming a person you don't recognise and then you have to get back to who you were.

"I changed the people around me and changed the way I worked. I'd had this great career but I had no life, I needed to get my life back. I learnt to meditate and I told everyone I needed time off every few weeks in my diary. It's working," she smiles.

"Life isn't just about getting what you want and having a great career, it's having what you need." And with her man by her side and a baby on the way, it seems Alicia's life is pretty much sorted at last.
