All good and well, but we all know what BP stands for. Shareholders do not make decisions about safety valves or their lack thereof.

its been BP since they aquired Amoco in 98, before the it was British Petroleum and before that it was Anglo-Persian Oil Company...

just as I am sure after this it will be called something else...

just like Transocean was called Sonat until the early 80's when it needed a new name to get people to forget they were responsible for a huge oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico...

If I understand this correctly Coup, you're attempting to blame the average consumer for BP's gross negligence? I'm not getting how you arrived at that. Consumers buy what they are told to buy. GM wants more profit, so they build the Hummer and blast the public with ads to buy it. Public does as they are instructed to do in order to keep with current standards (in the case of Hummer, that standard was set by GM and the creation of the Hummer).

Maybe I'm wrong and this isn't your intention, but I'm going to have to guess that it is because of the pics of suburbs and parking lots and references to shopping. By this reasoning, do we also blame the public for slave labor in China? Suicides at the iPhone factories? Toyota's negligence? etc?

As a consuming member of the public, I take offense to being blamed for BP's leak because I bought what was being pushed on me 24/7. (which is not just cars, but everything. Including the food YOU eat.)

Just sayin'.

If you don't think that the fact the american way of life is structured around the car isn't to blame for our insane appetite for oil then I just don't know what to tell you.

ultimately we have no one to blame but ourselves.

We really have to blame the entire world then. America is not the only country using oil, and this is not the first disaster to come from it.

The biggest lie kids are taught to believe when they are young is that they are "consumers."
In the mindset of consuming and being labeled as consumers, their subconscious reaction to the outside world is "i need to consume this. i may not need this, but i need to consume it."
They are born into debt thru no fault of their own, but they are instant indentured servants.

In the U.S. you can practically walk down any street and see piles of plastic refuse.
Massive amounts of plastic toys, computer peripherals...things acquired because they needed to be consumed, but which are now junk to be tossed in the trash, having become obsolete because of the next widget presented on the market.

GDP = growth = consumption

This is a no win standard which brings us to the tragedy unfolding today.

If the U.S. didnt WASTE so many resources there would be no need to drill in the ocean for more oil.

The real Guevara was a reckless bourgeois adrenaline-junkie seeking a place in history as a liberator of the oppressed. But this fanatic’s vehicle of “liberation” was Stalinism, named for Soviet dictator Josef Stalin, murderer of well over 20 million of his own people. As one of Castro’s top lieutenants, Che helped steer Cuba’s revolutionary regime in a radically repressive direction. Soon after overthrowing Batista, Guevara choreographed the executions of hundreds of Batista officials without any fair trials. He thought nothing of summarily executing even fellow guerrillas suspected of disloyalty and shot one himself with no due process.

Che was a purist political fanatic who saw everything in stark black and white. Therefore he vociferously opposed freedoms of religion, speech, press, assembly, protest, or any other rights not completely consistent with his North Korean-style communism. How many rock music-loving teens sporting Guevara t-shirts today know their hero supported Cuba’s 1960s’ repression of the genre? How many homosexual fans know he had gays jailed?

This also needs to be added-
"Though Americans make up just 4 percent of the world's population, we produce 25 percent of the carbon dioxide pollution from fossil-fuel burning -- by far the largest share of any country. In fact, the United States emits more carbon dioxide than China, India and Japan, combined."

I blame the corporations, not the public. Like you said, we are born into this system and born into debt. We are born 'consumers' and bombarded with advertising our entire lives. The corps could have come up with better alternatives for nearly everything along the way. Instead, everything is based on oil. And most certainly, the negligence of a massive oil company resulting in a disaster like this falls on the greed of the corp.

If, as a parent, I feed my kid nothing but sugar filled candy his entire life and his teeth rot out of his head by age 5, who is responsible? The kid for wanting the candy pushed on him? For being told "this is what you need!" Or the parent doing the pushing.

Oh, the birds! Beautiful birds.

P.S.

Notice that mask of King Tut of ancient Egypt has 2 snakes above the forehead. It could be the cobra snake.

Wrong. The only reason a corporation exists anywhere.... any corp... is to make money for the corp. There is no other purpose a corporation entity serves and no other reason for it to exist. The number 1 responsibility of a corporate entity is to make more & more money for it's shareholders. Nothing else.

amazing people today still have this stigma against socialism somehow relating to communism, but the truth is a captitalistic socialistic system with checks and balances would work.

problem is any power structure or paradigm shift is subject to corruption and usually ends up corrupted.

so where does that leave humanity? fuck if i know.

on edit-

oh yeah i just remembered. earth will be here long after humans are gone and will renew once again.

i feel zen already.

I blame all of the greedy politicians who have taken money from Big Oil. They have directly and indirectly allowed alternate forms of energy to be squashed and silenced.

The people are to blame to some extent too, but it is the politicians - on BOTH sides of the isle - who have allowed this nonsense to continue for decades.

Just sayin'.
so, what you are saying is, there is no free will? You simply bought what was being pushed, you had no choice?
