Pretty crazy how it's pretty much the same thing that has happened before. No big surprise, though as people are easy to forget and big companies are bound to take advantage of that.

What is worse is this isn't just happening in the Gulf. There are leaks much worse in the Niger Delta due to oil companies being too cheap to fix rusty pipes.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010...er-delta-shell

No one in the west would have ever heard about it either if not for this Gulf spill and it's been going on for 50 years..

btw this is from Exxon, Mobil, Shell and of course BP, so I wonder if all those people boycotting BP will add the rest to the list..

Smart countries require a relief well to be cut before they approve anything.

since 1947, oil companies have drilled more than 42,000 wells in the Gulf of Mexico and recovered about 16.5 billion barrels of oil. Against that, spills totaled about 176,000 barrels from 1969 to 2007. In a typical year, it was a few hundred barrels.

I think it's like the metric system and universal health care. Pretty much everyone but the US does it. hehe

I read that Canada was seeking to overturn the requirement, but recent events probably will keep it the same.

Norway requires it as well according to what I've read.

I'm sorry, I dont have a source with the actual factual information listed.

Forecasters are starting to say BP will declare bankruptcy to get out of its debts. Union Carbide, anyone?

I can see this happening to BP in the next few years, after it does its 'best' to clean up.

"The Dow Chemical Company purchased Union Carbide in 2001 for $10.3 billion in stock and debt. Dow has publicly stated several times that the Union Carbide settlement payments have already fulfilled Dow's financial responsibility for the disaster. However, Dow did not purchase UCC's Indian subsidiary, Union Carbide India. That was split up, renamed, and bought by the Indian government after the tragedy took place."

nothing changes.

Despite the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu is reiterating her call to end the Obama administration's moratorium on deepwater drilling, saying it will cause economic hardship in the region.

I mentioned this to someone from down there yesterday thinking she'd agree it was a bonehead move, but she says it's what the people down there want. They are PISSED at Obama for putting the moritorium in place in the first place, all because of jobs. Short sighted, but I guess when it's in your backyard it makes a difference.

Assuming the oil companies didn't lie about how much oil was being leaked like they did this time.
