Can you go a month without salt in your food?

My wife and I talked about this and it kinda got to me. Salt is pretty much in every food you eat. Well, processed food at least. Can you go the purely natural route and not eat a meal with added salt? Naturally occurring salt is fine, but no added salt.

You have been fasting for weeks? Very impressive.
It does not take many calories to feel a strong taste. Eat some salt.

We eat very little processed foods and normally don't add salt even when called for in foods we make. But popcorn and fries, to me it just makes them taste better.

Be warned, your body requires various types of iodine, which is only provided by salt.

From wiki: "Worldwide, iodine deficiency affects two billion people and is the leading preventable cause of mental retardation.[1] According to public health experts, iodisation of salt may be the world's simplest and most cost-effective measure available to improve health, only costing USD$0.05 per person per year.[1] At the World Summit for Children in 1990, a goal was set to eliminate iodine deficiency by 2000. At that time, 25% of households consumed iodised salt, a proportion that increased to 66% by 2006"

Too much salt is bad... but trying to go totally without it, isn't any healthier than shoveling down your throat.

Salt has been turned into a Villian, and without any real good reason. Studies have shown that having zero salt in your diet can actually be detrimental to your health.

I may add salt to something once every 6 months or so. I remember adding some a month ago and telling goodgirl to remind me to not do that again.

I have been fairly salt free for years . . . not counting Margaritas and the occasional Bloody Mary.

I read up on this before, there is so much salt added to almost everything you eat these days, there is no need to add it to anything.

Having said that, I can't stop shaking a little on freshly plucked tomatoes from the garden. A little isn't going to kill you. It's also good for the electrical signalling in your brain.

there is plenty of sodium in natural food, every food you eat contains sodium, everything from tea, to wine to eggs... it's pretty hard to be deficient in sodium...

Sure you can. I grew up with a mom who was afraid of salt for some reason. I didn't learn to cook with it until I was in my early 20's.

I did it some time ago right after high school, definitely home cooked, not a big fan of fast foods. it takes some self discipline - basically like with any type of routines, every time you have to remind yourself not to forget and keep sticking with your decision until it becomes enjoyable. food tasted plain for first couple of weeks or so, then your taste adjusts, you get used to it and food become taste pretty much normal again. I eliminated adding salt into cooking and salads and would use regular dressings from store which have some salt in them while was getting used to the plain taste
the key is to enjoy food, in this case learn to enjoy your food again, you can enjoy "plainness" in basic foods/taste while having a taste of it, mix it up for a variety and use some spice. I don't think I was eating much meat at that time, so can't really say anything about not salted meat - but i guess it would be the same especially in the beginning, don't salt meat and if using sauces - they will get you plenty of salt during the transitional time.

That's the best tasting kind, from my experience. However, iodine deficiency is a real problem so maybe mix in iodized salt from time to time. The problem is keeping salt to a healthy minimum while maintaining proper iodine levels.

You do need some salt in your diet or your body goes wrong.

There's nothing wrong with salt... there's just shit wrong with TONS of salt... same with anything really...

People that say they don't have salt in their food (and don't actively seek out saltless foods) are people that have no idea how to cook. Salt is in virtually everything for a reason...

I personally can not go without salt, I get hyponatremia... found that out in boot camp. I have to have a higher salt intake than most people.

I never add salt to my cooking. The odd shake of seasoning salt, yes, but never plain salt. The only use I have for it is in winter, I sprinkle it on the walk to melt the ice.

I use kosher salt in cooking, since it's a nice size and most recipes use a coarse or kosher salt when they give measurements for salt. It draws out the water in raw foods and enhances the flavor of some things.

I rarely find myself salting finished foods though.

Easy.

I cook a lot and rarely use salt or much of it. Mainly to season marinades, mixes, etc.

I remove all salt as much as possible and never add any extra to my meal. I don't like the taste of it.

Certain flavors can compensate for the salt flavor--for example, instead of adding salt, add some lemon juice. It depends on the recipe though.

Acid and salt are two completely different. Salt doesn't have a flavor if used properly.

Basically what you just said is, "Certain tools can compensate for not having a ratchet--for example, instead of loosening bolts with a ratchet, use a hammer."

I've gone for over a year eating only homemade meals and never added salt at all. I did have salt on my peanuts that I throw in my breakfast cereal.
But yes, especially if you workout you need some salt.
