:2cents Anti-Piracy Initiative Documents 287M Views on Tube Sites

Interesting technology behind this. I wonder if this is the same being used by the RemoveYourContent.com folks.

Quote:
CANOGA PARK, Calif. ? The Free Speech Coalition says its Anti-Piracy Action Program (APAP) has documented about 287 million views on 1,700 tube site videos identified with its spidering software.

All told, 18 adult production companies participating in APAP have fingerprinted more than 5,000 titles with the software to track content and gather data from infringing tube sites in its first three months.

Adam & Eve President Bob Christian called the FSC's first APAP data announcement "an eye opener."

"To see from a small test that over 13 million illegal, unauthorized viewings of just seven of our expensive, high-quality movies have occurred is staggering to us," he said. "This is important work going on.?

Since the program's launch in April, more than 1,700 take-down notices have been sent to infringing sites on behalf of APAP participants, according to attorney Gill Sperlein.

Sperlein, who is Titan Media's general counsel and leads Sperlein Law, oversees APAP?s day-to-day operations.

In addition to tracking content, delivering data reports to participants and issuing DMCA notices to infringing sites, APAP also offers producers an option to monetize their content on tube sites, the FSC says. APAP organizers are negotiating with tube site operators to take down illegal content and replace it with legal clips that lead viewers to a retail option where they can purchase content.

?I?m really excited to be working on this project, because it is going to bring about a fundamental shift,? Sperlein said. ?APAP provides a model for tube sites to go legitimate and for content owners to start getting their fair share.?

Sperlein also said the program offers free pre-litigation counseling to assist producers that are considering legal action against infringers. In addition, participants are given a FSC-branded APAP logo to use on DVD packaging or display on their websites.

APAP is available to FSC member content producers for a set-up fee of $450, with monthly fees based on the amount of content being tracked. For more information on APAP, contact (818) 348-9373 or [email protected]

I've heard rumors that at least one of those companies saw a significant increase in sales (3x) but haven't seen the hardcore proof (screenshots of stats) myself first hand yet.

I take my hat off to FSC at the very least for putting some thought and effort into a possible solution.

Honestly, I would say they're rumors... unless the company did something else to increase sales, which is very possible.

But I highly doubt it's due to piracy, as not a single other Company has ever reported such findings, for sure not 3x worth.

Well, time will tell. I think it will be another 5-10 years before anything significant it done.

By the time the law catches up, technology will have changed at least once, if not two times over. So it will have new issues to deal with, as we see every few years.

Instead of focusing on number of views, they should profile the uploaders and get to them. If you target the "top" uploaders (who are also subjects to criminal investigation, which means tools that can easily identify them) you can also prevent many infringements more efficient.

I should have specified..the 3x increase in sales I was reffering to was not in DVD sales but rather the studios affiliate program when the studio involved was able to redirect traffic from clips that were user uploaded. Again, this could all be rumors..but the concept is a win/win solution.

The people uploading the files live in another country and are paid to do it for the tubes, once they have the videos, they can just remove them and re-add in a few days etc under another random name.

If it's part of criminal investigation all traffic, communication and editing can be monitored live.
