Put porn where it belongs ? in an online ghetto
Plans to set up a porn-only internet domain should be welcomed

by Barbara Ellen

It's interesting that Icann (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) is setting up a porn-only internet domain, where addresses will have the suffix xxx rather than www. Interesting also that porn companies are very unhappy about it. Of course they are. Never mind the self-serving flannel about censorship, dedicated space online will result in an online porn ghetto, with sex sites filtered out more efficiently, loss of passing traffic and plummeting revenue.

That's the thing about porn companies ? they love screwing, so long as it's not with their bottom line. They know that xxx will be a disaster because it could herald the end of a phenomenon which has been around since the internet began ? the culture of "accidental pornography" (AP).

Most of us will have been sucked, so to speak, into AP. I have, during research. Before the more advanced blocking technology, it was hazardous to type "teenage girls" or, indeed, teenage anything into a search engine. Let's just say you'd get more than you bargained for, albeit surprisingly little information on British youth's intergender socioeconomic dynamic.

Elsewhere, horror stories abound of innocent children being just a few clicks away from donkey love. In truth, it's not children, or hacks like me, who make up the bulk of the AP demographic. It is the porn-deniers ? people who end up on sex sites, but prefer to pretend, even to themselves, that they're "just surfing". Sure you are.

This is the current bizarre situation ? a system set up to make things easy for those in porn-denial and those who sell to them. Meanwhile, the rest of us are forced to take action and often pay to avoid the same porn (parental restrictions, spam technology etc). Is this what xxx would do ? flush out the AP hordes, force them to make clear, defined choices about their online destinations, instead of lurking in the shadows of the regular web? Well, good. This would solve the main problem of online porn ? not the people who want it, but the people who don't: not for themselves or for their children.

As for censorship ? excuse me? When did porn (watching strangers shagging) become a basic human right? Porn consumers, who like to think of themselves as latterday Larry Flynt-esque freedom fighters, tend to take themselves, and what happens in their pants, drearily seriously. They might be surprised to learn that most of us couldn't give a liquorice thong what they get up to online, so long as it's all consenting adults. In the same way, most of us wouldn't care about someone buying dirty films in hotel rooms ? so long as we don't have to watch with them. This is what's happening right now on the internet, the whole of society being forced to deal with porn because one group wants to.

Ultimately, asking that someone type xxx instead of www has got naff all to do with censorship. If anything, it's helpful. In the supermarket, people don't march around the cheese or wine aisles looking for washing powder. So why must they search the entire internet looking for porn? There you go, porn lovers, society just made it easy for you ? your own designated smut aisle.

This move might upset porn peddlers and those poor, shy porn-deniers ? diddums. If people want porn, then basically they'll have to go forth and get their porn. In a strange way, the pro-porn lobby got what it always wanted. Hasn't it always argued that an individual's pornographic consumption is a private matter and not hurting anybody else? With xxx finally this looks like becoming true. As for porn ending up in an online ghetto ? it's where it rightfully belongs.

I got up at 3am and watched the ICANN proceedings. They passed a resolution sending ICM's application for .XXX back to GAC for evaluation to see if the application still met the requirements for establishment. There were two abstentions and comments were made that some of the Board members were very uncomfortable with the vote as they believed that they were voting on something that was not representative of the facts.

Without industry support, the ICM application should die in the GAC when they do their evaluation and find that the application does not have the support of its' community as alleged in the application. We can still kill this beast.

When GAC reopens public comments which I expect will be soon, be sure you take a moment and express your opinion.

Most news casters blew the coverage and got the story wrong......

I'd love to see her "research". How many are looking for "British youth's intergender socioeconomic dynamic" when typing "teenage girls" into google?

That only shows that your business is to stalk domains and extort businesses. Because all valuable domains are taken.

This industry just fucked itself in the ass once again. You should all pat yourself on the back. You've outdone yourself this time.

XXX will pass and most of the monkeys in the business will RUSH to buy them up as fast as they can.

I don't think it will pay off for them but it won't stop the rush. I can't WAIT for some of you pricks to infringe on my trademarks. I will own you.

Off course it won't pay off. Why would ANYONE want a domain that can be BLOCKED? Bad enough it would be done at the home but you watch, ISPs will be foced to block .XXX unless a person explicity says he wants access to them. Now how many people are going call up their ISP and say "Yes hello my name is Steve Jones I live at 123 Maple Street an I want access to porn" and odds are ISP would see this as cash cow and they can charge extra for access to .XXX. Now who is going to pay for access to a porn website when they are paying their ISP for access to .XXX? In their mind they are already paying for porn. So good luck to all the morons that are going to help the .XXX assholes become rich at the expense of the rest of the business.

+1

I can't beleive some people don't see this as something very very bad ! They've been trying for years to control the web. This is the first step.
We must do something about it. Really scary.

What we need here is a face palm.

This is beyond idiotic. If they want a safe "family" internet, create a .kid TLD and make it illegal to have anything "adult on. You could even have new "kid friendly" browsers that only worked in the new .kid tld. 100% safe and friendly place to be.

Governments and Churches don't want .xxx because it "legitimizes porn".

The people in porn don't want it cause of the fear of being blocked out of existence.

The ONLY idiots who want it are the morons pushing it over and over again cause it will make THEM money.

Yep the dumb cunt in the article doesn't get that. See even though poor is legal most peole don't see it as a legit business. Somehow cigarettes, booze and gambling are "legit" but not porn. Well if porn has it's own LTD well then it HAS to be legit. You don't give non-legit business their own LTD. You don't see a .meth or .crack do you? Hell you don't even see a .casino and gambling is legit. So you see those in the anti-porn movement that back this are hurting thier cause. one of thier points was that porn wasn't a "legit" business so it needed to be banned outright in all formats. Well guess what now it's legit so you can't ban something that is legit business.

for those that are for .XXX for whatever reason I can think of 2 phrases

blowback

"the road to hell is paved with good intentions". 'Good intentions' as in the mind of the .XXX supporter that is. But hell is coming for them though.

The article is really not that bad, but it is difficult for most of us to agree with the wording of the article because WE ARE IN PORN!

The BIGGEST problem with .xxx is that the majority of people ARE NOT IN PORN so it is very easy for them to be misled. To them, this may be exactly what WE wanted!

For example, if the average non-porn-industry surfer believes adult is getting MANDATED over to .xxx, or that the "harder" content is getting forced over, then they may search for .xxx versions of everyone's domains, believing that is where the porn is.

Even in the article in this post, the information is incorrect, with the author stating that the new addresses will begin with xxx instead of www.

Public misinformation will likely be one of this industry's biggest problems.

If xxx is done 100% right, and it allows us to use this without states and other countries blocking the whole block of xxx then we should do good with this, but as I and everyone else knows that wont be the case! Personally I would love to be able to surf goggle and have my kids surf goggle and find exactly what we want without all the porn sites being in the results! This is me as a father and a surfer.

On the other hand me as a person that is in this business to make money it does scare me to see this happen because it will be much much easier to take away the little money I do get! I would love LOVE to see the Internet have a section for Kids only so they can surf and get all the info they need for school work, games etc. I can only wish though.. *shrugs*

Most aren't bought by adult WM but by domainers. Also some adult WMs are just catching domains of their own .com variants.

I have to say that even as a "civilian" surfing before I got in the biz, I've never found anything like as donkey love or anything sexual "accidentally". She's probably also convinced that those involved in Adult are also promoting kiddie stuff, or will eventually put that into an argument since she seems to be an "expert."

Wonder how much Stuart is paying her.

When will ICANN see through his ruse of "protecting the innocent" and realize its just a cash cow for Lawly. His site seems to be pretty certain that it will pass this time.

Personally, I think not only should .KIDS be in effect already, but that all new computers sold should ONLY have .KIDS allowed. It would serve a couple of good purposes.
