.XXX Gets Official Approval

Quote:
Official approval has been given for the creation of an internet domain dedicated to pornography.

The board of net overseer Icann gave initial approval for the creation of the .xxx domain at its conference in Brussels.

Icann's approval will kick off a fast-track process to get the porn-only domain set up.

ICM Registry, which is backing the domain, said .xxx would make it easier to filter out inappropriate content.

The decision ends a long campaign by ICM Registry to win approval.

Stuart Lawley, chairman of ICM, welcomed the decision and said it was "great news for those that wish to consume, or avoid, adult content".

No, it hasn't.

Good to know we can still count on the media to oversimplify things, though.

Well, yeah. The company still has to prove to ICANN that they have the backing of the adult industry... which should be interesting.

IIRC, you must have the .com to get the .xxx etc. You just can't go buying up every .xxx you can think of.

Regardless much of it is voluntary?

I thik .xxx is the least of everyones concerns, now that the senate approved the creation of the internet kill switch which lets the president nuke public and private networks for 120 days.

I'd be very scared of that one and in fact. I am.

You just have to go to iffor.org and read what they are all about. They want to control the internet and save the world.

yep and this part "Adopting .xxx will be optional. However, some tech blogs speculate a push to make the domain mandatory for adult-only sites." is not good.

Nice, I wonder what right has USA to decide about the Internet, isn't it world wide good of all nations?

Thats the kicker. I bet we will be seeing level3/etc moving corporations over seas so they cannot be controlled by the US gov. More/less the bill targets the "ability" to do this. Though by doing this, shutting off say Verizons backbone for 120 days will put millions and millions and millions of people without internet or tv. Since services like FiOS go over IP they are all screwed. Not to mention the loss of business etc that would stem from this.

All forms of trading would come to a alt, the economy as we know it would come to a stand still because why? Wall street can't operate. Banks can't do their overnight lending. It would crumble everything.

It truly amazes me that the people in DC really just have no clue, they *think* they are doing something good but in reality they have no concept or idea behind anything or how it works, they just go by whoever lobbies the most and pays the most to get the attention before the gov whether they are right _or_ wrong.

Whats even more funny is 90% of the US gov runs over Verizons network, i.e ELAN/TLS/point to point services. Shutting down private and public networks means the gov in essance, shut itself off.

I love how that fucking piece of shit scumbag Lawley goes around claiming that ICM is a non profit.. What a load of fucking bullshit.. His whole fucking motive behind all this is PROFIT and money.. Mark my fucking words, if this .xxx ever becomes mandatory, I will personally sue him, ICM, IFFOR and ICann.

Over the past four years, ICM has worked with the key constituents within the
Community to develop support for the concept of a non-profit entity
representing responsible members of the online Adult-Entertainment community.
At the time of submission, many of the worlds leading adult-entertainment
companies have expressed support for this application. In particular, as
specifically requested in the RFP, ICM has detailed letters of support from
major providers in the USA, Canada, Australia, UK, and Continental Europe,
expressing support for the sTLD, for the sponsoring organization and for the
proposed policy-formulation process. These supporters either supply services
to, or themselves manage, the majority of adult entertainment on the Internet.
Ahemm...who are they?

ICM has said it expected the first .xxx domains to go live in early 2011. It said it had more than 110,000 pre-reservations for .xxx domains.

the difference is china is communist, and they have only one ISP. China telecom.

If the US thought they could put up a great firewall, they would put Verizon, at&t qwest/everyone else out of business.

If it is true that you have to own the .com to register the .xxx, then they have shot themselves in the foot big-time. Just no one register any .xxx that you own the .com to and problem solved. The whole TLD will wither and die on the vine.

yes, this is why all their ips belong to the same organization. There is only one controlling entity that controls everything at their great firewall of china.

Must I hold a name in another TLD to request a reservation for the name in xxx?

In order to use the reservation request process, you must hold the registration for the requested name in another ICANN recognized Top Level Domain, including .com, .net or a country code domain for example. That name must have been registered and in use as an adult site prior to Feb 1 2010. You may submit an expression of interest in names you do not own in other TLDs.

Current law already provides the president with broad authority to take over communications networks, the committee said, pointing to Section 706 of the Communications Act. That portion gives the president authority to "cause the closing of any facility or station for wire communication" and "authorize the use of control of any such facility or station" by the federal government. This can be done if a state or threat of war exists, it does not require advance notification to Congress, and can continue for up to six months after the threat expires.
