I'd vote for the ipad, since you can do more than just read books with it.

mom and daughter have the DX, they love it, set up an amazon account, use the kindle to shop for a book, find one, hit download and your reading 2 minutes later. The voice feature is pretty cool, it reads the book for you

Do you just want to read books? Then the Kindle sounds OK. Otherwise it is useless.

Well, they're both pretty goddamn worthless unless you want to use a computer to not get anything worthwhile accompished.

Just keep posting on GFY, and save yourself some cash.

my advice, buy real books and use your computer for the other stuff.

personally i spend enough time looking at a damn computer screen and when i want to read i grab an actual book.

I'd say they're two completely different categories..
reading books - Kindle

magazines, little games - Ipad

I have both - I won't read on the ipad because I don't like backlighting...
I read a lot, and have completely deserted real books... Love my Kindle...

I like to hold a book in my hand, I like the experience, the smell, the feel of it.

I buy books on my iphone and ipad using kindle app. both are very good. I would say go with the ipad as it has a lot more you can do on it. Battery lasts forever too.

That said, I do still enjoy a physical book as well.

I have a original Kindle and won an Ipad from CamZ (thanks Scooter and Dan). I don't like Kindle app for the Ipad. I had to adjust the background colors and the backlight gets to be after a while. I spend enough time looking at a lit screen all day to do the same when I want to read a book.

I use my Kindle pretty much daily. Been thinking about getting a newer one now that they lowered the price, but I don't know that I'd get the larger DX version. I like my smaller one.

The Ipad I use for a bit of net surfing from bed, checking things through apps like the weather and such, and a few games.

If it's for reading books, get the Kindle. One thing people don't realize is that the Kindle uses e-paper and you can look at it all day long in any lighting condition without eye strain. An Ipad is basically a regular computer screen, your eyes will get tired reading long form on it, especially if you are somewhere that causes glare.

Kindle - Long form reading.

IPad - Short form reading.

Awesome....... this is a really cool idea.
We should all buy regular, paper paged books.....

(In other words, I totally agree)

What he said. Sure Ipad support Kindle books too but if you buy the device for the purpose to read books, then the choice is simple.

Buy a kindle if all you want to do is read books. Buy an iPad if you want to watch movies, look at pics, surf, do email, run apps, and read books.

It's kinda like saying should I buy a pocket knife or a multitool leatherman.

I'm thinking about an e-book reader, but I'm going to try one out first. Having a real book in front of you is definitely much nicer than a screen...
