Android spanks Apple?s iOS 4 in JavaScript race

The JavaScript engine in Google's Android 2.2 running on a Nexus One phone soundly spanks Apple's iOS 4 incarnation running on an iPhone 4. Also, This Just In: Firefox is Still Slow.

The Android versus iOS test results were announced by Ars Technica, while the snarky-but-credible verdict on the just released beta of Firefox 4 is the result of tests conducted by The GigaOM Network's WebWorkerDaily.

The Ars testing discovered that in pure JavaScript performance, there's really no contest between Android 2.2 and iOS 4. When running the industry-standard SunSpider benchmark (which you can run here), Android 2.2 was nearly twice as fast as Apple's offering.

iOS 4's comparative performance was even worse on Google's own V8 benchmark, which you can run here. Ars found Android 2.2 was well over four times as fast. Of course, V8 is a Googly benchmark, but 4X is 4X.

As The Reg reported last week, development tools firm Appcelerator recently surveyed US developers and learned that a higher percentage of them think that Android has a better long-term outlook than does iOS. The Ars tests, it may be argued, add weight to that viewpoint.

I have an iPhone 4... I think the features, the UI, the apps, and the form factor of the device itself blows the doors off of Android phones. I've used both extensively. This is an opinion, not a fact. I personally think the iPhone 4 is the best "smart" phone out there...

I DON'T think the Android sucks... I just don't prefer it... what the fuck is up with Western culture where people love to hate more than they love to love?

I'm an iPhone 4 user and I think this benchmark fucking rocks. I love competition! I hope Apple gets on their JS engine and optimizes it/redesigns it even more to stay competitive. If this wasn't posted there would be no reason for them to spend the man hours beefing up their JS engine.

I'd also like to say that your original post is to the point. It shows valid facts... not conjecture. I appreciate and respect the fact that you did not make an "iphone sucks" post...

Please find me one piece of consumer shopping research that lists javascript speed as a reason for purchase for a phone.

Exactly, when there is competition like this consumers are who wins.

I honestly don't think the iPhone sucks at all. What I do not like is having to go through iTunes for everything, no Flash, no way to remove the battery, no memory cards, weird proprietary connectors, and how Apple controls what apps can be put on their phones.

The bottom line is there are some great Android phones now and for the first time Apple has competition. This is good for everyone.

These are all totally valid concerns and decision making attributes for sure.

For me personally, I don't care about the battery... never had a need to remove it and with the iPhone 4 the battery life really is fantastic. No memory cards thing doesn't bother me either as I've never had a need... the internal storage is quite enough for my needs and tethering for transfer works for me too :P

I am NOT however an iTunes fan and I don't like Apple's policies concerning apps. However that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make for the benefits I enjoy... namely:

- The app selection and games (great dev support and some really high quality stuff)
- The screen, OMG the screen, the pixel density is so high for the first time in my life I can't make out the individual pixels! I'm a graphics whore and this just totally feeds my inner geek.
- The form factor, I love the iPhone's form... totally a personal preference
- 720p video capture... always with me all the time, love it
- Facetime rocks, I know a lot of iPhone users and we all use it, lots of fun
- The UI... I MASSIVELY prefer the iPhone's UI to Android, I can't stand the Android browser or even the UI, I feel it's definitely lacking... once again, I'm a graphics whore... I'm also a UI nut...

I understand that these aren't decision making factors for everyone but they are for me and I'm tired of people saying the iPhone 4 sucks... CLEARLY it does not. Just as clearly Android doesn't suck either they're both great products... I'm also a HUGE fan of the new Palm UI.... gorgeous and I love the fact that the PalmPre has touch sensitivity outside the actual screen... I really like the way they've implemented it so that swipes outside the screen effect the OS rather than the window you're currently in. I feel like this UI feature is more intuitive than any other smart phone UI...
