Im a new Mac user and I have some questions...

Hey Guys,

I just picked up a mac Book pro the other day and I have a few questions to help day to day tasks easier.

1. What's the best way to make a screen shot?
2. I tend to save files to my desktop and when running multiple aplications. I hate having to close a zillion things to get a file.
3. Whats a good picture viewer I keep multiple pics on my desktop and when i open a pic it opens in preview and all i wanna do it hit next but I cant i have to close it out and click on a new pic
4. What;s the Mac equivalent of ctl alt delete or like a task manager. I have too freeze ups and its 3 weeks old. I would like to see what tasks are running and why it bogs down every once and a while

1.)screenshot- apple+shift+4
2.) f11 or use spaces
3.) highlight multiple images on desktop and press the spacebar then use arrow keys
4.) in spotlight search ( spotlight on topright of screen ) type in 'activity monitor' or use apple ( top left icon drop down ) force quit to see applications that are stalled.

hope it helps

Sorry for your loss. I got a mac and got rid of it. They are damn sexy to look at but a PC smokes it.

Mine was nothing but crashes and freezes.

1. Command+shift+3 will take a whole screen screenshot.
1a. Command+shift+3 will allow you to "draw" a box on the screen where you want to capture
2. put all 4 fingers on your trackpad and slide them up at the same time like you're extending your fingers. it'll move everything out of the way so you can access your desktop
3. You need to select multiple pictures for the next stuff to work
4. Command+Option+Esc will bring up the force quit prompt

2. You can set hot corners in the System Prefs > Expose & Spaces, for a variety of functions, one of them being to show the desktop.
3. Free: Open multiple pics at once in Preview. Free: Browse them right in the Finder, hit the spacebar to open in QuickView.
3b. I use an app called GraphicConverterX (paid app) which I think is the best. Aperture is okay, Lightroom is okay... stay away from ACDSee for Mac, it is one horrible piece of shit.
4. Command + Option + Escape to force quit. Go into the Utilities folder and open Activity Monitor to see what's running.

for 1a you mean command+shift+4

Also for screen shots as well as the two mentioned I use webkut - http://toki-woki.net/p/WebKut/

At the risk of becoming very unpopular in certain circles, I agree with you comletely! I have never been able to become accustomed to MACs, except for Model 10s but those don't count!

;)

Sorry to hear that. We have 2 iMacs and 1 Macbook and these things NEVER crash. I've been PC forever and got my first mac last year. 99% of my current work is now all on mac. When I'm forced to use my PC running Vista, I want to cry.

For the people saying to select multiple files, then hit the spacebar. You don't have to select multiple files - you can just hit the space bar and then scroll through the files. If you select files first, you are limited to only scrolling through those selected files in the viewer. Otherwise you can just scroll through any file inside the folder you are in.

This viewer works for all files as well, not just images. If it's a PDF, PSD, DOC, etc etc. They'll all be expanded in the viewer to more easily see.

right now (macbook > macbook pro) - just go look at the specs

since the macbook line was just updated, they are on par with the outdated macbook pro line. if you want a laptop, then get the macbook. if you want a macbook pro - wait until the line is updated.

We used a bunch of old MACs for target practice once. MACs shooting at MACs was tunza fun!

Good point about the 13". Picked up the 15" i7 (macbook pro) and couldn't be happier.

...nah. I have been a mac guy for over a decade and have had 3 unrecoverable freezes lifetime on OSX, which was originally introduced around 10 years ago...

I am very cool with a hard reboot every 3.33 years.

settings > expose and spaces > active corners..
and bind corners, when you will move your mouse to binded corner, then mac will run some action like hide all apps, or show dashboard etc..

click on image, and push space.. much easier, also works with other file types - like videos, or text files..

I have 3 MacBook Pros 1 Macbook Air and my baby the 8-Core Mac Pro but the best thing Apple sells is their Apple cinema 30" flat panel. Everyone who comes to my office owns at least one within the week! Its a MUST have.

Hey Matt thanks for the prompt reply. I tried to add you to icq but alas Adium is sucking ballz.

I still don't understand the screen shot deal i clicked those buttons and then to I copy into into photo shop.

Your technique to view images works like a charm as well as the activity monitor.

You can set up your screenshotting function any way you like. Cap to the clipboard or cap to file. I set mine up to screencap to the clipboard so I can just paste into PS. But I think the default is to make a file. (that you can also specify the format)...

Hey Vid,

I was going thru some old webmaster pics and I found a few of us and it got me thinking of where you are and I think my icq list ate you up. Bottom line how are you and what's new in 2010.

Mark I have always viewed you as more tecky as me so this gives me hope. I got the basics down but its the little things that piss me off on a Mac. Its more of a Derek problem than a Mac problem.

What do you like about it so much that your a hardcore Mac Fan.

1. Download Skitch, you won't be sorry.
2. F11
3. Download Xee
4. Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder within Applications

seems your questions have been answered.
I like using the app grab for screen shots.

It took me a month to get fully used to the mac and now I hate having to use the vista pc's in the office.

I still forget that the control key is the command key on the mac. For a while I used a windows keyboard with the mac to make the transition easier but and now used to the mac keyboard also.

Highlight a media file, right click, (or Apple + i) and GET INFO. In the pane that opens, locate ALWAYS OPEN WITH and put in VLC. This will need to be repeated with every file type (.mov, .avi etc etc)

Also, you can add me to the list of people you can hit up on icq or FB and ask any questions.

Dwreck, yeah Activity Monitor shows a lot of info. I don't know of a simplier version unfortunately.

Hit me up if you ever need any more Mac help. I converted about 3 years ago and love it.
