For Those Who Have Children II....

It seems like at least once a week I hear some part of the debate to raise taxes, or switch around education spending to give every child from K-12 a computer for school. Claiming this would benefit in some of the following ways.

1. Help poor and minorities.
2. Keep the cost of public education down.
3. Provide better resources to both student and teachers.

While I have my own opinion as a home owner. I do not have children. So those who have kids feel free to chime in with your 2 cents, and remarks on how your tax dollars are spent.

Your thoughts?

Have you got someone pregnant? Seem to be asking a lot of children related stuff recently.

The only opinion I have on issuing children with a laptop is that while I am using the computer a lot i'm not writing much by hand at the moment. My handwriting has gone really untidy. If kids are typing all the time and not writing with a pen is their handwriting going to be unreadable?

I have kids. Computers are cheap as fuck right now and "poor minority" kids spend more than the cost of a laptop on bling and sneakers.

If I paid taxes I would be pissed as hell if someone used them to buy laptops for minority kids. Maybe a "bling for sneakers" program I could get behind. But free computers? I did fine without one as a poor trailer park kid, kids today can buy their own.

Agreed. My thoughts exactly.

Study Shows Computers Lower Grades, But May Boost IQs

Many groups want to bring a computer to every child in the world, on the assumption that the computer will help the child in school and life. But is that assumption true? A new study of lower income families in Romania shows that the introduction of a computer in the home markedly lowered grades in school, but improved the child?s cognitive skills, like spatial relations . We speak with study co-author Ofer Malamud, assistant professor of public policy at the University of Chicago.

I have a nine year old kid, and all of the kids in schools these days have computers. My kid has a laptop and is fully computer educated at age nine. My kid can do HTML already.

i can barely trust my 12 and 13 year old niece and nephew with a laptop no less a 2nd grader.. They lose stuff like mittens and jackets all the time, you really want the government to flip the bill for broken/stolen laptops for kids on top of all the other things you are paying for?

didn't think so buy them books. cheap and durable.
