Taliban: 2 U.S. soldiers captured in Afghanistan

Taliban: 2 U.S. soldiers captured in Afghanistan - Jul 2010
Coalition forces offering $20,000 reward for information leading to return

KABUL ? Afghan insurgents captured two U.S. soldiers and are holding them in southern Logar province, a Taliban official said on Saturday. A NATO official confirmed that two U.S. service members are missing in eastern Afghanistan. The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) had no official comment, but a Reuters correspondent in Logar heard local radio broadcast appeals offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to the safe release of the two.

"Early this morning two coalition personnel went missing. They are believed to have been captured by insurgents somewhere in Logar province," the broadcast said. "They may have been separated from one another or maybe in the process of being moved to another location." A Taliban spokesman told Reuters three ISAF servicemen had been captured but one had died. He did not elaborate. The two U.S. personnel were last seen wearing standard U.S. military camouflage, the radio broadcast said.

One was described as about six feet tall weighing 220 pounds with blond hair and brown eyes. The other was described as 190 pounds, bald with a thin mustache. Both men have tattoos, the broadcast said. "Coalition forces are offering $20,000 reward for any information that leads to the successful return of these two," the statement said, without identifying the men. There is believed to be only one other ISAF soldier being held by the Taliban, who released a video of him last Christmas. Violence in Afghanistan has risen sharply since a reinforcement brought to 150,000 the number of foreign forces facing the Taliban and two other insurgent groups.

Anyone ever read a book called Bravo Two Zero, talking about being captured behind Iraq lines? Holy shit, that book gave me nightmares.

Don't worry, I'm the Taliban will follow the Geneva Convention to the letter.

4 US troops die in bomb blast in south Afghanistan - Jul 2010

KABUL, Afghanistan ? Four American service members were killed Saturday in a bombing in southern Afghanistan, where international forces are stepping up the fight against the Taliban, officials said. A NATO announcement did not give the nationalities of the victims of Saturday's blast, nor specify where in the south they died.

However, U.S. officials confirmed they were Americans. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity under rules regarding casualty identification. The latest deaths bring to 69 the number of international service members killed in Afghanistan this month, including 52 Americans.

Afghanistan is a lost cause. Our own guys can't get rid of the Taliban, how can we expect the Afghans to manage it? As soon as we leave, the Taliban is going to take over again.

no need to wait to take over:

White House shifts Afghanistan strategy towards talks with Taliban

Just imagine how bad it would have been if Russia or China would have assisted the "insurgents" like the US did ...

True, but look at the uproar from John McCain whenever someone suggest that
we pullout.

The only reason Obama is letting this go on is because he will be crucified by the
conservatives otherwise. And it seems some dems feel the same.
It was Gen McChrystal, who voted for Obama, that spit on Joe Biden's suggestion
to scale back troops and use more targeted attacks to wind down the war.

That was the beginning of McChrystals firing.

Little known fact is the Taliban has already tried to surrender. Obama and Clinton turned them down.

they can't. The USSR tried to take over the country and they didn't play nice like we do and they gave up

I'm sorry, is McCain running the country? NO, it's Obamanation that sent added troops to a loosing battle and the voters that voted for him voted for that, he promised that he would do it if elected president

Afghanistan isn't too far removed from the stone age as is. Dropping bombs on rubble is like pissing in the wind.

Taking out the al-Qaeda/Taliban leadership with smart bombs is the only thing that seems to work and that can be done without ground forces in Afghanistan.

As for Iraq, that damn war never should have happened in the first place

Do you mean just like our US troops did at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq after the US overthrew the Iraqi government on the premise that there were WMD (which turned out to be non-existent), or how the CIA did with their deplorable "rendition" program?

Maybe you are talking about the mercenary operatives of Blackwater or other such organizations, that have a record of atrocities as well.

How many remember that the US government helped Osama Bin Laden and his cohorts during the unsuccessful military campaign which the USSR fought for well over a decade in Afghanistan?

US troops have been in Afghanistan for over 9 years, propping up a puppet government that is almost totally corrupt. During that time, the heroin trade (which was largely eradicated by the Taliban, whom we also once supported), has rapidly risen back to prominence.

Coincidence? Drug traffic seems to flourish whenever the CIA is involved.

Afghanistan truly is a quagmire. Let's not kid ourselves. The so-called "coalition" is primarily made-up of US troops, many of them whom have been on multiple deployments now.

Not only the war has taken a toll on US troops in both Afghanistan and Iraq, but PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) has been behind record suicides amongst our troops whom have been subjected to multiple redeployments in non-traditional warfare.

I am a six year veteran of the US Navy, and I say that this madness must stop!!!

We need to get our troops out of harms way, instead of propping up corrupt governments which have little popular support, especially in countries that pose no major threat to us, but are costing our economy enormous billions of dollars, while not increasing our security very much at all.

I do not believe it has been noted yet in this thread, but the two troops captured (one of whom has reportedly died/been killed), were actually servicemen in the US Navy.

Here is a map of Afghanistan - where is the ocean near Afghanistan?:

There is no ocean or sea near Afghanistan.

I can only surmise that the sailors captured were quite possibly black-ops Navy SEALs (elite special operations commandos).

This war sucks to high heaven, and it mostly appears to only benefit and enrich those with financial interests in the military industrial complex, while sucking the lifeblood from our most precious national resource, the troops whom volunteer to serve and defend the US.

To continue on with this madness makes no sense whatsoever to me.

Let's end this losing cause, and put our tax money wasted on this lost cause towards improving our own economy.
