Cuba to allow private businesses

More Cubans will be allowed to work for themselves and hire their own workers, the country's president has said, while ruling out wholesale reform of the communist economy.

Raúl Castro, who was speaking to parliament at the opening of its biannual session, said the steps were aimed at creating jobs as the government seeks to cut jobs from the public sector over the next five years.

About 95% of all Cubans work for the government and Castro suggested that as many as one in five state employees were redundant in what he called a "bloated" state sector.

This is great news for the Cubans who live on the island, since now they won't go to jail for selling stuff or having their own little businesses. It's bad news for the ones outside the country waiting for the government to collapse, since this will inject new money into the national economy.
Personally I think it's great. I'm pro-freedom and would LOVE to see Cuba become a state of the Union, but I'm also pro-everyone-has-the-right-to-eat, and these new laws will allow Cubans to feed themselves and their families.

You want Cuba to become the 51st state?

Even if their country opens totally to democracy, don't expect them to allow others taking over their economy any time soon ...

About time. Markets work. Centrally planned economies don't. Just ask China.

China = A real Communist Country.

It always amazes me when a country takes over businesses owned by people in another country, possibly kick out a lot of foreign nationals. Then is surprised when that country does not trade with them or send aid. Cuba and Zimbabwe come to mind.

Yeah get Bastita back. That guy was great for the people of Cuba.

If the revolution hadn't happened then Cuba would still be overflowing with the mob and in a worse condition than Haiti.

Wait, your telling me they figured out that private business was better than a bloated government?

Is Barry reading this?

think about that

Well you can blame the US for that. And the overthrow of the Shah of Iran.

The West needs to make sure the despots they back are feeding something down to the people.

State capitalism doesn't work. Problem with China was officials basically lying about the levels of production, leading to over allocation of resources resulting in famine which fucked up the economy badly.

Cuba is a *success* story for a state capitalist system, they make very good use of their small resources.

Only 2 places behind the richest country in the world on healthcare.
