:stoned Stephen Hawking: Get The Fuck Off Earth by 2110

Stephen Hawking: Off Earth by 2110? - Aug 2010

Physicist Stephen Hawking delivers a lecture in South Africa in 2008.
For years, Hawking has been urging continued progress in human spaceflight as a long-term survival measure.

We may have just 100 to 200 years to figure out how to get off this rock and give our species a cosmic insurance policy, physicist Stephen Hawking says in a fresh interview with BigThink. This time, Hawking's views are given a stark spin: "Abandon Earth - or Face Extinction." But Hawking isn't really suggesting we should just give up on our planet. It's just that right now we have all our eggs in one planetary basket. Here's the key passage:

Quote:
"If we are the only intelligent beings in the galaxy, we should make sure we survive and continue. But we are entering an increasingly dangerous period of our history. Our population and our use of the finite resources of planet Earth are growing exponentially, along with our technical ability to change the environment for good or ill. But our genetic code still carries the selfish and aggressive instincts that were of survival advantage in the past. It will be difficult enough to avoid disaster in the next hundred years, let alone the next thousand or million. Our only chance of long-term survival is not to remain inward-looking on planet Earth, but to spread out into space. We have made remarkable progress in the last hundred years, but if we want to continue beyond the next hundred years, our future is in space. That is why I'm in favor of manned, or should I say, 'personed' spaceflight."
Hawking said that "if we can avoid disaster for the next two centuries, our species should be safe as we spread into space."

That's all we need. Spread this clusterfuck into space.

Come to think of it, Hawking has been pushing this agenda for quite a while now. Maybe he knows something we don't?

I don't mean to imply that he isn't a very intelligent guy but thats sort of stating the obvious.

Yeah he state the obvious. We can't do much about cosmic disasters but what are we going to do in space if we can't solve relative simple problems at home? Run from it?

No, he's just smart. Even if we carefully manage all of our resources we can't remain on Earth forever. The need to survive as well as the need to explore command us to get off of this rock and move out. Space stations, earth rings, moon colonies, Mars, who knows... Planet Earth as beautiful and as fucked up as it is, can't be our only home forever.

The idea of long range space travel is a nice dream and that it will remain for a long time. I think this guys been watching too many Star Wars movies.

The only way to survive is to live within what the Earth can provide.

I disagree 100%. If we can't have peace in our own backyards, we won't have peace in outer space and the worlds beyond.

We must fix and heal ourselves first, before we move outward or become extinct as our fate may be the only cure.

One of the things I get to do a lot now is watch TV. On National Geographic and History Channels. So I see a lot about the research into space travel. There are big problems with it.

One is space and the vastness of it. Even at the speed of light it would take a very long time to get to the next star, let alone find an inhabitable planet. There is a theory that time can be bent. Think of time like a sheet of paper, point A on one side point B on the other. Say 100 light years apart. The theory is that it can be bent like folding the paper in half so they are next to each other. As I said it's all theory.

Without solving this problem there would big problems taking fuel, food, water and air enough to sustain humans.

Then gravity. The human body wasn't built for gravity and prolonged exposure to weightlessness is not good for us and will run down the body. Even in suspended animation.

We need to solve the problems we have living here first. Not try to find somewhere else to fuck up.

We've landed on the Moon and we've landed spacecraft on Mars. That's two places already reached and we're exploring the possibilities of future colonization there. That's not out of our realm and it's happening right now.

It's not all about mankind killing each other in a fist fight it's about a planet with FINITE resources and how mankind chooses to use them. What makes earth an inhabitable planet can also be destroyed with the wrong choices mankind could make.

Stephen Hawking does state the obvious and it's obvious that many don't get it.

Humans are not going to survive on another planet.
They need Earth. They need to see the sun and the moon from earth.

In space travel going to the moon is the equivalent of moving to the other end of the sofa.

Humans only goal, and mission in this Universe is to leave Earth and become Galactic.

Without doing so there is just no future for us.
