Appreciateing what you have

Ever taken a minute out, sat back and thought about exactly what you have in life? All the good things, the friends, the luxuries etc.

I took a few mins out earlier, never really thought about it before, but damn i've come far!

Ya, it is easy to concentrate on how shitty things are to appreciate the things we have. Human nature maybe?

Agreed, life is sweet.

House paid for, cars paid for. 2 great kids, a third on the way. Been able to enjoy life for some time. Spend a lot of the day just doing my own thing, working on one of my disco's going out and doing nature photography etc.

No complaints here.

see its pretty sweet when we open our eyes and see where we really are.
most of us are self-employed doing the things we love like gerco mentioned above, theres not many people who can say that, ask a mate how works been and generally it will eb the same old "crap, boss is a wanker" talk.

We have some pretty good luxuries in life and i agree... "Life moves pretty fast, if you don't stop and look around once in a while you could miss it"

Things are just things. If you define yourself by the things you have collected, you don't have much. Case in point:

I was at the BMW Dealer the other week picking up the wife's car from routine service, and had to wait because they were busy, and so while I was waiting, I couldn't help overhearing this dude talking to the service manager, trying to squeeze as much as he could out of what was left of his warranty and eliminate the costly repairs he was facing somehow. The service manager asked him, "Why did you buy a luxury car if you can't afford the maintenance on it?" and the dude said, "Would you believe just two years ago I was making $300k per year? Now I can't afford the tow truck to get it here!"

Lesson: You can work your ass off for years, spend your time & money acquiring expensive things, and lose it all in the blink of an eye. If you define yourself by your things, what then when you lose those things?

appreciate life. take some time each day to just be. not have, not want, not worry, just be. takes just a few minutes and feels so good to quiet the mind.

My wife and I decided to go out for a nice lunch today. She mentioned she was at the mall the day before and she saw a small group of kids with Downs. We both commented on how lucky we are that our child is unusually healthy. Then we started talking about how lucky we are compared to most of our friends - nice house, decent cars, live well.

Life is good.

Why the need for comparisons? Why not just be happy with your stuff without having to measure your dick size with your neighbours?

It is an accepted measurement of contentment that appeals to the middle class on up. The poor tend not to care about material shit so much. This measurement dictates that we, as individuals and as a society, cannot know if we are "fortunate" or not until we measure up against those around us. For example, you might have a 6 bedroom starter mansion and think you're doing okay, but if 6 bd homes are the lowest level of housing, and everyone else is living large in full 30 room mansions.... then obviously you suck and need to apply yourself more. But you'd never know that until you measure up to those around you.

Ignorance is not bliss.... it's just ignorant.

This is the "Keeping Up With The Jones'" rule. And to play, you must measure. It defines your very being.

Hit the nail on the head there.

My type of appreciation dosen't necessary come form comparing myself to others, but comparing myself to how i was in the past, that way i can see how I have grown and progressed

I wake up sometimes at about 5:30am and put a chair out on the lawn and wave to my neighbors while reading the newspaper as they go to work... Around 8:40am I wave to their wives and ask them if they "need anything" as they come back from dropping the kids off at school. Sux to be me!

It depends if your happy with what you have or happy that your making it to where you want to go....

Sorry to put a dampener on things but.... Are you really happy????

If you are, fantastic. If you want more & to go further.... Now your on the road to happiness!

There is not problem having a dream that is catchable....

Unemployment benefit & the thieves are buggers.... Earn your way to the top! The guys that are on unemployment benefit can never make it to the billion, so they have no aim.
It doesnt matter if you dont make it, but at least try!

I rarely think about it since I feel unsettled at the moment and always trying to work hard...looking for a 3rd job now. Trying to purchase property and then want to have kids.

The only time I appreciate things is if I see someone really struggling financially or physically.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Like wise you don't have to have luxuries and things to be happy. Happiness is in your head, all you need is drive your mind the right path.

Yet that doesn't stop me from trying to earn all the money in the world.

Shit, I'm full of contradictions!

I agree with Amp (big surprise) since i don't spend my money on "things" nor do I compare my success to others. I don't have that keeping up with the Jones thing (thank GAWD). What makes me happy are not things but accomplishments; sometimes I can't believe that I, a guy with ZERO computer skills or knowledge pre-2006, could "make it" and do well for himself. So when I finish a website or do something creative that's when i get excited. LOL

I love V Rocks lifestyle, too - tho getting up that early SUX. LOL

I'm very happy with what I have. Great wife and daughter, surrounded by love, live in a country I love, house paid for, car paid for, money in the bank, money coming in and no real worries. My health could be a bit better, but I'm a survivor.

I may come across here as a griper but that's only because of the way this industry was/is heading. Over all I'm a very happy bunny.

Spot On Agent 488.

To attempt to communicate an experience results in countless variations and interpretations. Therefore to actually know, one must experience.

Each individual experience exists only in the minds of those that were a part of that experience. The existence of that experience will only be known in those minds and no one else's. Therefore what really exists are only the individual "memories" that each of us possess.

Life = Experiences

That is all any of us really own... and I appreciate every one of mine

Great thread,
With everyone so worried about what they don't have, you don't hear people enjoying what they do have.

Especially good friends and close family.

Great post, love the positive threads...which we don't see around here to often.
