I had to put Whitey to sleep today

Well, after all these months of trying to save little Whitey, I had to throw in the towel today. The boy had stopped eating all together a few days ago but I kept hoping that he would regain his appetite, like he had done several times before, and pull through. But after watching him get weaker all weekend, I could no longer deny the truth.

I scooped his little skinny body up this morning and took him to the vet. He didn't fight me to keep from getting in the cat carrier - maybe he knew where we were going and he was ready. They agreed with me that it was really just cruel to ask him to keep going and so I held him while they gave him first the sedative and then the final shot to stop his heart.

I'm just really in a daze and cannot believe he is gone. From my work desk, I could usually turn around and see him sitting outside snoozing in the sun. But I won't see that again and it hurts like hell to know that. No more waking up with him cuddled beside me, purring his ragged pur, at night. No more looking out at night and seeing him sitting under the streetlight, keeping watch on the cul-de-sac, ready to pounch on any frog who dared show himself.

Thanks, buddy, for sharing the time you did with me and making my life a little brighter.

Sad!

That's the thing about pets, you become so attatched to them, and getting used to seeing them do the same things at the same places every day, you miss them like hell when they're gone.

You did the right thing though. No more suffering for the wee fellow. Sounds like he had a good life...

It's always hard making the choice to put an animal down but in the end you are doing what is right for them instead of being selfish and keeping them alive and suffering because you don't want to lose them.

RIP Whitey.

I believe in reincarnation... from animal species to human and vice versa... possibly interplanetary.

Same thing kinda happened to our cat last week. She had cancer but was not really struggling, then about two weeks ago her breathing was getting hard. So we had decided we would put her down. We went to the Paul McCartney concert that night and when we came home she was dead

Sorry to hear about Whitey's demise, but you did the right thing. I've had to put 2 cats down who both lived to over 16 years each. It's extremly depressing but take some comfort in knowing that you gave your cat a wonderful loving home and a nice long life. I'm sure he was a very happy cat. Post some pics!

I watched as her life support was cut. Her mother made the decision.

It was a very weird experience 7 people in a room to watch someone die.

She lived with me for 15 yrs... her boyfriend calls me shes in a coma.. they been together 2 years doesnt know if her mom is gonna get there doesnt know what to do... I fly out.... Im like totally im gonna hold her hand she'll come out of it... I'll bring her back with me she see my new house we go have lunch and shopping.

Same here.

I remember that feeling from lost pets of old, and some of those things my current cats do. Luckily I should have some time as they are 2-3 years old. But makes you appreciate them a little more reading that story.

Best wishes friend.

god, that's so sad! It's terrible when a pet dies, but even worse when you have to make the decision to put them to sleep. I had to almost 4 years ago, with my Akita, and it was just terrible.

I wish you the very best, and as cold as it may sound, may be you should get a new kitty. It won't replace this one, but it will give you lots of love and make you feel a lot better.

RIP Whitey. Just remember you did the right thing my thinking of what's best for him and not yourself. I know too many pet owners who keep their pets going on IVs, etc when the pet has no quality of life and is in real pain. Sorry to hear about your loss. Hang in there.

Sorry to hear of your loss. Pets are like family, it hurts like hell when one passes on.

I'm sure Whitey had a good life and you gave him a good home; May he R.I.P.

Sorry to hear that, man. But sounds like you did the right thing.

It's also really admirable that you stayed in the room with him and held him the whole time. I haven't had to put any of my guys down yet, but I did do it for my mother's dog. I remember the vet telling me how nice it was of me to stay with him and keep him relaxed while they did it and how often times people just leave their pet there because they can't handle it emotionally.

I'm sure it was very hard for you, man, but HUGE kudos to you for doing the right thing for your special guy.

Where's Whitey's pics? My indoor tabby cat Princess is draped across my lap as I sit at my computer desk and type this. She's four years old now and very attached to me. I hope to be spoiling her for many years to come.

Thank you all so much for your kind words. There are a lot of pet lovers on this board and this is the nightmare of everyone who has a pet they love. I had put this day off as long as I could - everyday, I'd tell myself that he'll eat something later today. But I finally had to look past my fears and just let him go.

It's really starting to kick in now that he is gone because this is the time of day that he would be sitting on my desk with me, under the light. He had gotten so skinny that he was cold all the time, so I would let him sit under the light with a towel over him.

How can I post some pictures of him? What is the best way?

Harsh man

Exact scenario for me for my cat last year.

Stopped eating. I was force feeding him some supplement at first. But after him not even wanting that I knew it was time.

Sucks every time I think about not having him around. Damn you.

I'm putting my 18 year old cat down Wed - had her since she was 6 months old. Her breathing is labored, her heart is beating too fast and she's not eating as much as she should be. She's never been to a vet since her 1st year shots and to get spayed so even the trip there is going to be traumatic (she's 100% single indoor cat and the vet said she'd be fine with no followup vaccinations - and she she made it to 18, I guess he was right).

As hard as it is to put down our animals, I really wish it was an option for very sick people too.

RIP Whitey and Silver

Hey Peaches, check around there might be a mobile vet or a pet hospice in your area. If you find one they will come to your house to perform it.

I know my siamese gets extremely traumatized by leaving the house, to the point he loses control of his bodily functions. When the time comes, I pray there are still organizations like that in my area to assist me in the home to make it as easy as possible on him.

Thanks, Shelly - my vet does do home calls but I'm on 4WD road. My neighbor who lives on my road just went through the same thing and it was easier on the cat to wrap her up and take her up there

I'm sorry for your loss. I had to put my 15 1/2 yr old Husky down in Dec. It was one of the hardest things I ever had to do. She had a liver tumor and held on for 3 months. I stayed with her too while they gave her the shot.

The hardest part was that she gave me one last lick at the very last second and I honestly couldn't tell if it was "please daddy get the vet off me, this hurts" or "good bye" (as if she knew).

Pets rule and are like family.

I am 29 going on 30. Last year I had to help a Big Dog come to chase bunnies in the sky and know exactly how you feel. Old XXXXX was 17 years old and he came as a puppy. It was like losing a member of the family. No, it WAS losing a member of the family. I was like 11 or 12 when he joined us. I freaked out.

His Great Nephews populate my place and my Mom cannot refrain from calling one of the pups "XXXXX" even though that is not his name.

Or maybe it really is.

My sympathies and sorrow.

Sally.

Good looking cat.

He had a good life too it would seem.

You did everything you could and a lot more than many would.

Sounds like he was a damn good friend to you, but he had the best friend he could ever ask for in you.
