London/Paris transportation strike
Seems like this happens a lot. Man I can't imagine how that would disrupt a city so dependent on public transportation. Everything must practically shut down.
Are these workers actually getting screwed more than anyone else or are they just throwing a fit at the expense of everyone else? http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/eu_europe_strikes

It doesn't happen that much in London. It gets threatened a lot but only happens in reality now and then. I am very pro-union but in my view the transport union will strike for just about anything.

They aren't getting screwed but the unions love to make it sound like they are to justify their own existence and monthly subs.

I once flew into Paris when the airport baggage handlers were on strike. After we got our luggage out of the bins and made our way onto the Metro, the conductors went on strike after about 3 or 4 stops. It was awesome.

Our local ticket office is in central london and has both tube and rail connection. They want to close the ticket office so that there will be times when you will not be able to find anyone to help - with simple ticket problem, or may be a person under a train, robbery or even fire.
The Union is trying to protect jobs but also the service. The rich, the newspaper owners, TV bosses, are all anti union, and they don't travel on tubes, trains and buses. |

I actually agree with the issue over closing ticket office. If nothing else from a safety point of view. As a woman, when I have to travel late it is at least something to know there is a human on the station to help if you are feeling unsure of your safety.
The problem is that the union has threatened strikes for much more petty things in the past so people start to gloss over when they talk. |
