Anyone own a laptop with an 18" screen or bigger?

I currently use a six year old Dell Inspiron 15.4" screen size laptop as my main email and communication device and it's time to upgrade. I know that 17" laptops are pretty widespread now but can anyone recommend an 18 incher or above as a desktop replacement? 19"? 20"? I am not worried about portability as I mostly use it in my office in a docking station and plant it on a table on set on days I film. Mostly I want a real big screen so I have lots of screen width for wide spreadsheets and other uses.

I own a Toshiba Qosmio x505-Q875 which has an 18.4 inch (1080p) screen and I love it. There's different versions of the Qosmio, so watch the model number while looking. It has all I need, Intel Core i7 Quad-core CPU, 6-gigs ram, HDMI out, blu-ray, 7,200rpm HD, 1-gig Nvidia video, illuminated keyboard, and more ! I got mine from New Egg, the price dropped down to $1,479.99 now
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-804-_-Product

They have different versions of the Qosmio, if you wanted more hard drive space, there's the x505-Q890 which has a 64-gig solid state drive in addition to a 500-gig hard drive, but it's $200 more http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-Qosmio...58675&sr =8-2

Check out the HP Pavilion dv8t or if you have the budget, the ThinkPad W701ds.

I am not sure if mine is 16 or 18, however I typically only use it when I travel or watch tv around the house and need to keep an eye on things. However, I am seriously looking at a netbook.

Lugging this thing around can be a major pain. Plus I typically only use it for email, IM, and some browsing. A netbook is much easier to manage all the way around for the use I have in a portable.

I think the Toshiba Qosmio and the HP with 18.4 screen are the best at that size.

Forgot to add the HP has a better quality screen than the Toshiba.

rockin' a 15in macbook pro here. Wifey has a 17in HP and it seems to me like anything more than 17in would be awkward

I would recommend sticking with the 15.4 for travel and just buy a monitor kb and mouse with a USB docking station for the house. Have a 18 inch laptop is like carrying around a bowling ball.

Don't get a netbook, i bought my gf one. While yes it is light and conveniant, the resolution is 1024x600, which is too short to even open the options menu in google chrome

I have a 24" desktop monitor and picked up a 10" netbook just to tool around with and occasionally pull pics off cards when I have no space left...

I used it about 25 times and sold it for about 2/3 of what I paid.

If you're looking for a laptop that will do what other laptops do, don't buy a netbook. Beyond using the internet they're not too wonderful.

I'm just going to add another 24" next to the first one and call it a day.

I agree with acer.... I haven't got the 18" screen, but my acer works so fast, efficient & is nice looking. The keyboard is fantastic to use as its different to most

Thanks for the recommendations. I definitely want an 18.4" 1920 x 1080p screen. The HP Pavillion DV8T models look sweet and have coupons online for a good price but also have horrible reviews on Amazon.com for the build quality. The Toshiba Qosmio series also looks pretty good but some of the reviews also express some issues with the reflectability of the screen, awkward keyboard layouts and lack of Windows disk. I am surprised that Dell doesnt offer an 18"+ screen.

There isn't much difference between 10 lbs vs 6 pounds the way I use a laptop. And who wants to bring an external monitor with them anywhere? I use my laptop on my computer desk attached to a docking station at home or sitting on a dining room table on days I spend in a house when filming, or on a hotel table when I travel.

Sager makes great products but they are a boutique manufacturer and are super expensive. The Toshiba some here recommended or the HP look a lot more reasonable with roughly similar specs.

if the Toshiba has the i975 quad and 12GB triple channel RAM, nivida 275m video card and SSD HD with 2 other drives in it. my thing is I need to work with HDV on location and I can use the sager as a second 'render box' at home if I need to... I'm a pro content producer so my gear reflects that.

"Win 7 64bit. Intel Cor 2 Duo T6600" good luck with this

I have a dell studio laptop 1555 with their optional screen upgrade, so its 15.6" but fullHD 1920x1080.. at the office/home I use it on a separate flatscreen.. 15.6 is too small for comfortable work at resolution that high, but if you need to FIT everything, it will do.. Plus you can always lower the resolutino, or use zoom in browser. I really like it as a solution, battery life is good, not too heavy to lug around, has full HD, and combined with external monitor + wireless kb/mouse its great. Theres also HDMI output if you want to use it on a fullhd lcd tv
I think they're still on sale at dell.com and they're below 1k, worth every penny.

Those are indeed some serious specs. I prefer to do HDV video capturing and editing on my desktop workstation in my office where I have all my pro gear including decks, monitors and acccesories so perhaps that's overkill for a laptop for my purposes. I am leaning towards one of the Toshiba Qosmios with the 1920 x 1080 screen res.

anything over 17" is too big and shouldn't be called a laptop. hard to rock a 21" laptop weighing 15lbs to a sbux.

whoops! I read your thread as needing a notebook desktop replacement. I shoot on the road at times so I need a 'portable desktop'

go with a 17" MBP then.... it's got plenty enough power to not only scan through catalogs of images here 40 TB deep, but also to run design studio gear and Adobe Suite software at the same time, so it should be plenty for a location shoot. I don't see how one more inch is going to make a difference.
