Explaination of the bad - From the Players Ball

First I?d like to begin by thanking all of the sponsors for participating in this years Players Ball. It was definitely in the top 2 Players Balls ever, pretty close to that Snoop Dogg show.

Be honest, if you stayed for the whole show and made it past the bullshit C2K gave us, who did you like the show? I'd bet that 95% of the people who saw both Digital and Xzibit were totally thrilled and had a blast. That place was rocking.

I would like to also say that the bad parts were the worst of any Players Ball. Just about everything within our control went over as smoothly as possible, the things we leave in the venues hands were out of control. Our biggest mistake was using C2K again. The building is one of the best venues anywhere, the management and security is the worst.

Here?s what went wrong. If I?m gonna take the heat, which is unavoidable, I better have an opportunity to explain what really happened.

C2K Fuck Up List -

1) They lied about our starting time, they changed it on us. We were supposed to get in at 10:30, as always. Usually they cancel their normally scheduled 10:00 pm show for us, since we pack the house for several hours every time. This time they changed their story at the last second, keeping a 10:00 pm show (Lord of the Dance) and forcing us to get in late.

2) They lied about how the lines were going to be run. We warned them several times about how many people show up and that they need to manage the crowd better then in the past. I said to expect at least 5,000 people. They assured us everyone would be let into the VIP promptly at 11:45 (as Lord of the Dance was letting out downstairs, VIP?s enter through the upstairs door). They continued by saying everyone would be carded while in line behind a barricade, then they all can simply walk right in without any problems. Then the regular pass holders would enter as soon as the people downstairs evacuated, saying they?d all be pre-carded in line to make things faster. The answer to this problem is simple, but they were stupid. All they needed was metal barricades to keep a controlled line. Instead they used a vinyl strap to hold a massive crowd of people. C2K?s fuck up 100%. We tried our best to make sure this didn?t get screwed up, they were simply negligent.

3) Due to their weak straps, people bum rushed the VIP door as soon as it opened and a psycho security guy flipped out and pushed people back with a bad attitude, then threw a chair at a wall in his rampage (it was caught on tape with many witnesses). He was out of line, and that created the first delay. I chewed him a new asshole, but it didn?t matter because the management wouldn?t remove him, saying they were undermanned. Finally after almost getting in a fist fight with him, he said fuck it, I?m out of here and walked away. Again, metal barricades is what any venue would have to control a crowd of this size, unless they have a fleet of 200 guys working, which they didn?t. No one was helping us as were we informing them of all disasters with their security.

4) No strict enforcement of different leveled passes. It seemed to me that they would check the passes for VIP?s at times, then there was no one checking. We paid for them to have that covered, they slacked in that department at the beginning of the night. Again, a C2K fuck up, it?s their people. We can?t bring in our people to do that, it?s their venue, they had to be responsible. We paid for them to do that.

5) The second level VIP area was too crowded, not because too many people had passes, but because they wouldn?t let people sit in the balcony seats that could hold at least 400 people. We always had that balcony in the past and without it, it seemed too crowded. We gave out less VIP?s then in the past. They never explained that would be shut down. However, I heard they charged people $100 to$200 to sit in those seats anyway, for the few that did. That?s bullshit and that?s why the VIP seemed crowed. Then they weren?t checking the 3rd floor for sponsor passes at first, which were private suites. These were supposed to be issued to a select few. Man did they fuck that up. Then the worst part was when they started kicking people out later that night and making them pay to get into areas. They always deny this when confronted.

6) People who had passes were going out to the bathroom and trading their friends passes to other people outside the venue. I?ve heard stories that guests that had passes were trying to sell them to outsiders who were paying anything to get in. In the past that was prevented by using a magic marker on the pass once used with a stamp on the wrist. That system worked last time, but they didn?t do that this time. Why? Because they?re fucked up! Who?s fault was it that people from outside our industry got in? We didn?t issue passes to outsiders, it was our own pass holders selling them off outside. Shit, you almost can?t blame them for trying if they felt they could get $100 to $200 a pass, which is flattery to the Players Ball. It just sucks that we throw an event to entertain our people, then our people sold an industry event pass for money to outsiders. That?s not right. We do try to make this party ONLY for our people, pornstars and a few rappers and celebs, not lurkers trolling casino?s.

With all that being said, the only other fucked up part was their sound people. The sound company I hired had to work with THEIR sound company and that?s another issue. You get the idea. You try to throw a flawless party and things outside your control mess that up. Nothing is more frustrating. However, Xzibit?s sound was great and he was happy with it, it bumped!

OK, that?s the bad part. I'll post the good parts in another thread soon.

Enjoyed Meeting you and your father You guys seem so nice. We never got a chance to hook up with you to give you the pictures we took so Hit me on ICQ and I'll pop a cd your way.

We met a LOT of people in the industry at this show and had a great time with all of them. I have to say it was a refreashing trip. So many great people.

We can't even imagine the amount of work it takes to put a show like that together.

I'm sure Helmy would agree with my statement, he threw his Gigamix there. We spoke about things the next day, after his party. He had no idea what he was in with their people. They're so out of control, you'd just assume that they've done events before, you know?

Anyway, everyone I've ever talked to who's done an event there would tell you the same song and dance from them. I've done 5 parties with them and evertime it's a nightmare.

We only use them because they're in the hotel and they can hold 4,000 people. We felt by moving locations we'd lose a lot of our audience, the webmasters. It's not easy doing these things, trust me.

Yeah, it was pretty fucked up that we stood in line for over an hour and a half just to see people to the left of us (the supposed line) get through the door first (me and my girl were fifth in line but got in like 30th!) and that people with regular passes were up on the second floor spilling my $8.00 drinks left and right and trying to crowd me out. It was also kinda fucked up that I payed $300 for players ball vip tickets just to get to the expo and see you guys giving them away for free, and the ONLY thing that made up for that was you D-Money, you gave up 6 passes to us instead of just the two we bought. I had outsiders (non-industry people) offering me like $200 per ticket but I promise you, I didn't sell any to them because that was OUR party. I gave the extras to some friends I met at internext to help build relations.
The whole thing was pretty fucked up and for the most part, I blame the Venetian for that. No one even asked me for a pass the entire night and I saw a few people who weren't even part of the expo walk into the VIP section with nothing more than their ID. Nevertheless D-Money, I have to say that you are a great guy and throwing that party was a great way to thank us. Every big event like that has its problems...I did my best to enjoy the evening anyway.

D-Money, have to admit I was pretty much disappointed with the whole experience myself. I don't know who all stayed at the Venetian this year but I was sorely disapointed. They told me that C2K is under seperate management, but between the two, I don't see why we need to have another Internext there.

I know you all put a lot of work into the show, just a bummer it didn't come off as it should have.

Other than the show being late it was ok. Digital Underground seemed like they were having a few problems which seemed to get a few people upset. I know I went to the bathroom after Digital Underground and people were just pissed and leaving.

We stuck around for Xzibit who, you gotta give him credit, he really got the crowd back into it (at least for those of us up on the top floor). I was there with some people who sponsored the party and we had sponsor passes and it seemed to take forever to get in the door. Lines were all over the place, people being extremely pushy etc.

I am sure it is extremely hard to put on that show, but I would say that moving the venue to a more competent facility will only help the players ball after talking to the people who were also pissed off.

The music was great, the facility was bad, but we had a great time. Thanks to you guys for putting on the show.

Andy

Two of my buddies who are in the industry and who had passes were going up in the elevator and just happened to be in there with Dmoney. They introduced themselves and thanked him for having them at the party. As soon as he got to the top floor, Dmoney told security he was with these 10 people and that my friends were definetely not with him. My friends felt like total shit and were embarassed.

Thanks D

Ill tell you what i would not of given a shit about the whole vip thing if i would not of paid a 150$ for a ticket. Im always the kind of guy who will support peoples events with some money. But when i watch people giving away what i payed a 150$ for like they were water. makes me feel sorta like a ass.

no biggy i heard the actual show was good but i bailled after a little while.

i am agreeing with kman

we waited like an hour and a half in line, with SPONSOR vip passes and still weren't in. the line broke, some dude was yelling rude comments, and we were like fuck it and left.

i seriously don't understand how c2k could employ such morons to run a gig.

players ball looked good, too bad we couldn't get in to enjoy it (unless you feel like waiting 3 hrs in a line of animals).

The management of that club is bullshit, there was no difference bentween sponsor or vip passes when trying to get in.

They ran so late at the Gigamix, that half the people in line left. VIPs were supposed to get in at 10:30, and we didn't get in until 12:45. If I were throwing that party, I would tell C2K to FUCK OFF, and shut it down before it started. If you tell me a venue is available at a certain time, it better, or I'm pulling the fire alarm to empty it out.

Those of you there saw that I dedicated the GFY award to those fuckheads, as well as the webmasters.

Well, I agree with the negatives about that night, so out of our control due to C2K's fucked up people.

Let's first set the record straight about pre-paid VIP's. They weren't being issued out to jus anyone, only to the people that the sponsors felt like giving them to. My D$ Show is also a sponsor, so if I give a VIP as a part of my sponsorship, people see me doing that and say we gave some away to people who didn't pay. Damn right, become a sponsor and that's one of the perks, you get a bunch of VIP's to give your people. I can assure you, we were very strict in issuing 's since a few people paid for it. Second, we only sold a total of 20 VIP's if that, so for people to get the impression so many people paid and are upset, we didn't get the support pre-paid VIP's we were looking for. It's very much appreciated that those 20 VIP's were sold, it helped pay for the tips we needed to pay out that night.

"As soon as he got to the top floor, Dmoney told security he was with these 10 people and that my friends were definetely not with him. My friends felt like total shit and were embarassed. "

First, if you have a sponsor pass and you're leaving the elevator, there's no need to explain who you're with, all they care about is that you have a sponsor pass. If they didn't have a sponsor, why should I say they're with me? People don't understand how many things I have on my mind while running around taking care of every detail single handedly. Then, consider our VIP's were being shit on, so I had to fix problems while doing an already difficult job.

Then, I get hit up every 2 feet for a VIP or backstage pass.

Not an easy thing to do. People who stress me out over the small stuff really suck.

Oh yeah, VH1 is doing an hour show on the Players Ball with yours truly hosting the show. You want to have pressure, try those circumstances out and see how you do.

I can promise everyone this, THE IS NO WAY IN HELL WE'LL EVER GO BACK TO C2K.

All of our problems are stemmed from them, other then their issues we did everything right and have every reason to be proud what we accomplished that was within our control.

I want to give some props out to D$ who's not only a really nice guy but throws a helluva party. D - I'm just sorry that you had so many issues with C2K. Those things that are out of hands are most often the things that screw up the best laid plans. It's unbeleivable that you had to put up with C2K's shit. A change of venue is definitely called for and I hope you get your $ back from those guys for their screw-ups.

It was hot and crowded...that's all I can say. People keep bitching about the Venetian's facilities...why not look to have the entire convention some place new, like the Mandalay Bay. Shit, you have to walk a mile to from your room to the Sands Expo. There are how many different hotels on that strip????

I missed the Players Ball this year ( slept throught it...lol) but I am not suprised by the BS that happened, despite all of the hard work that D-$ puts into making it happen.

Having been at the last 2 Players Balls at C2K( and had a great time at both) the management and security of the venue has always managed to fuck things up in a big way.

D-$ and everyone involved in putting the Players Ball together get nothing but respect from me.

Speaking to other sponsors that put on parties at the Venitian this year I know that the management here at the hotel (yeah...I'm still here) are nothing great to deal with.....magic bills over and above stated contract costs seem to be the norm at the Venitian....not including bills for damaga of course...

I hope that you read my whole statement about the VIP passes D-Money, as I said you made up for what (at the moment) I felt slighted about when you tossed me the 6 tickets, so don't think I'm getting all bithcy about it, and now that I understand why others were handing out tickets, I'm not mad about that part at all and always was glad that I bought mine because I believe in supporting great things.
This was my first time to the Expo despite being a 7 year veteran of this business and had very little understanding of how things work. And for the record, next time I go, you can damn sure bet that I'll buy VIP tickets again. Just to clear up something I'm not straight on, if I bought a sponsorship package, that would get me a Sponsor pass, right?

Yeah...I swear the Hotels there were the biggest scam going for Vegas with the Cab Drivers running a very close second, when I checked out yesterday I had an extra $500 and some change in charges that weren't even mine!

Not to sound like an asshole, though in reality I can be one.

But, didn't you make a post like this 2 years ago, or was it last year?

Maybe even 3 years ago?

Remember this D

Fuck me once shame on you...

Fuck me twice shame on me...

Thanks for the explanation, D-Money. I guess I won't need to post the pic of me burning my unused VIP pass like I planned.

After hanging in the VIP line for over an hour, only to watch it crumble as people bumrushed the door, we finally decided to cut our losses and took off.

D, thanks for the tix, we went there after Players Haters Ball and got right in time for Lensman's award...at that time everything was very managabale and we saw no lines and got in smoothly.

my suggestion:

let the floor people in at hour X and VIP's at X+2 hours,
;-))))

The people at C2K definitely dont have their shit together. We ran into the same issues DM mentioned. Venue opened later than promised, security kept people in line, and our staff had to grease C2K staff to get last minute issues resolved etc.

Unless C2k goes under new management, we wont be holding another party there. But regardless attendance to GigaMix was well beyond expectations - which turned out to be a double edged sword.

To answer a few questions, yes I did have a statement almost exactly like this one, same kind of getting screwed.

The reason we tried it again is because the last party everyone got in real smoothly, no problems. I figured they've learned and now they understand how to handle a massive crowd.

The biggest problem they have is subcontracting security that are dick heads. And from what I hear from local club people, they're very crooked. It's not a coincidence this keeps happening.

To answer Serge's question of "let the floor people in at hour X and VIP's at X+2 hours"

No shit Sherlock! LOL I haven't said that since grade school. I know, I know, I know. But the venue fucked that up when they changed out 10:30 VIP line to 11:45. Why? Because they got greedy and threw a show right before ours, so we couldn't get in yet. Imagine if VIP lines were at 11:45 and regular pass holders got in at 1:45 am. Xzibit didn't perform until 3:40 am as it was. Great idea, I've been doing exactly that, but they fucked me up again with lies.

From Got XXX:
"I hope that you read my whole statement about the VIP passes D-Money, as I said you made up for what (at the moment) I felt slighted about when you tossed me the 6 tickets, so don't think I'm getting all bithcy about it, and now that I understand why others were handing out tickets, I'm not mad about that part at all and always was glad that I bought mine because I believe in supporting great things.
This was my first time to the Expo despite being a 7 year veteran of this business and had very little understanding of how things work. And for the record, next time I go, you can damn sure bet that I'll buy VIP tickets again. Just to clear up something I'm not straight on, if I bought a sponsorship package, that would get me a Sponsor pass, right?"

Believe it or not, we really made this a real VIP, we weren't just giving them to everyone, ask anyone who tried our booth. The venue closed the balcony onthe second level and that made it seem like too many people were there. Had it been opened, it would have been awesome. And the only way to get a sponsor pass is to be a MAIN sponsor. We call it a SPONSOR pass to avoid the confusion from VIP passes. You can buy a sponsorship which includes VIP's. I can see how it's confusing, so I went out of my way to explain it to almost everyone. I even threw in a couple sponsor passes anyway to most smaller package buyers to make them happy.

Darin wrote:

I don't think I've read a post that said it wasn't good. The party was awesome for those who stayed. It was within the top 2 Players Ball's ever, in my opinion and most others. If you ask people who stayed til 4:30 am, they loved it and had a blast. Most people who say they didn't like it didn't really stay to see it. Digital Underground didn't start until around 2:30 am or so. I can understand people getting tired and wanting to leave, you can only ask so much from people. And I do appreciate those who stayed.

For the record, if one more muther fucker sweats me about VIP passes or backstage passes the night of the show, I'll ignore you. We have a booth for 3 days, no reason people can't talk to me then. When shit goes down like this one, I have bigger problems to deal with.

Also, I didn't want anyone backstage, only the performers and people who needed to get an award. The venue screwed that up and let all of those people back there It makes it hard to get artists to begin their sets when idiots are standing on stage acting stupid. Why do they need to be up there? Are they performing or something? The hot chicks I have tolerence for, cause I'm a guy and that's the way a guy thinks. But a bunch of druck dudes crowding the stage when they shouldn't be there is dumb. We almost didn't get Xzibit to perform because of it.

OK, I'm done venting, back to being a diplomat.

DDollah,

Congratulations on what I'm sure was a kick ass show. It takes so much (out of you) to put on such things, sorry that c2k had so many problems.

I waited outside up stairs an hr and a half, there was a crush of people going no place, had to leave at 10 am for the other coast. It was exactly 12 hrs from driveway to driveway. Sorry I could not get in to pick up my award that sucks, I'm an old fucker and my feet only hold me up so long. Anyway, I did actually show up with pass in hand but I couldn't even see anybody to take it!

Max Respec because you have the ability to get a shitpot of people out to the PB. That's what the sponsors want, eyeballs and warm bodies. Being a master diplomat with the show biz connections is one hell of an asset to work with plus the years it takes to get it "just right".

Very best of luck to you mon, next one will be the super mega success I know you've always wanted.

Earlier this week it was reported on the local news in LV that the Venetian paid Michael Flatley $250 million (yes, that's right, $250,000,000.00) to have the Lord of the Dance show at their venue for 5 years. They've prepaid about $68,455 per show...did anyone ever see 912+ people in line for that show?

Everything happens late in Vegas right! Thanks for the party D-Money, the hotties @ our table and the DUDE from Jersey who loaded endless joints made it a great evening!

Too bad there wasn't better communication on the change of time, so people could make alternative plans instead of just hanging out! That's my 2 Fucking cents!

Bring back the Dub All Stars!!!!!

Peace Out

Aside from management issues imo C2K is the *perfect* venue for the Players Ball's major music acts - which draw huge audience numbers.

According to management we had 900 or so webmasters turn out for GigaMix, but they where too scattered through the bottom and top floors.

Since a major segment of GigaMix is the XBiz Awards ceremony we'll most likely be going with a cozier venue next year.

As always the Players Ball had a *monster* turn out and I was there partying till 4am, which says alot about a party since I'm usually in bed by 1am.

If only people knew what is all involved in throwing a party of that size. There will always be last minute issues.

DM threw one helluva party, period.

Why is the convention always at the Venetian... ?

With the influence that our industry has -- we can invent a new "place to be" synonymous with porn/adult internet... I'm as much for tradition as anyone, but why always be a bitch to a machine that isn't gracious... I'm all about more Hollywood action... I felt appreciated as soon as I entered the door of the Westin...

anyone who has ever thrown a party knows that there are like 8294379759439598 variables to consider and your probability of even just a single fuckup is always extremely high.

props to dmoney for holding it together with his duct-like grip and give him some credit. the factors that we all criticize were definately out of his control(other than fucking the C2K venue completely, which is obviously the future plan).

i had fun rocking the mic, had fun throwing my hizzles in the izzle for shizzle, and thought it was a dope show. stay up.

because they have the convention center ;)

Although Mandalay Bay has a new one that is opening.

DMoney, sorry for our client flaking on the sponsorship last minute. They were ragged out about Ice-T cancelling.
I'm curious as to what your contract with The Venetian specifically stated about start and warmup times? When I was promting concerts and festival shows, we always had that shit triple checked and triple backed up. If a venue operator had pulled half this shit with start times and lack of reherasal/warmup time, we had a penalty in the contract. I understand the problems with them using their thuggish security goons to run security, but I'd also have that included in the contract, that they must provide a certain number of officers for every 500 people projected to be in attendance. Again, we had penalties written into the contracts for failure to provide that. We were lucky though, that 90% of the time, we supplied our own security (off-duty cops and bikers, mostly). I can appreciate the problems that can go wrong with a party/event of this magnitude, but after so many of these shows, I figure most of those would be taken into consideration and added as penalty clauses in case they cropped up again.

I'm not knocking you or the ball, the turnout speaks for itself, just little things as a former promoter that I know we used to have covered to avoid too many pains in the ass. I'm not telling you what to do, but I'd be all over C2K management and climbing into some ass...and I would continue to do it until they stopped picking up the phone and started ignoring me or actually did something about it. Maybe call your contact at VH1 and let them know what happened and see if they can append their program ;))

D-baby, don't worry about it -- I don't care where you have an event, SOMETHING will always fuck up. Sometimes major, sometimes minor, and the more people you have attending, the more chances for fuckups.

I wasn't there for long -- but I didnt have to wait to get in at all -- it was a bit crowded upstairs but no one MAKES you stay up there -- down on the floor it wasn't nearly so crowded...

I have heard -- and I want you to get JenMoney to really push Paul -- that we are moving to Mandalay next January -- which would be PERFECT -- they have so much experience with handling major fights, concerts, etc, that there is no way it wouldn't go more smoothly -- if the weather would hold like it did this time you could have the party outdoors even, on the beach.

The service at Mandalay beats the Venetian all to hell -- for me, it was worth spending 20-50 bucks a day on cabs to NOT stay at the Venetian -- I was at the Aladdin and as usual they were fantastic and I loved staying there.

The Venetian is the problem, NOT the Players Ball -- the Venetian is everyone's problem --witness Lensmans issues with their suite, hell Magick sent her wedding dress down to be pressed and it came back FILTHY, prompting a 4 hour fight with the hotel manager and the housekeeping manager 2 days before her wedding.

Yikes Zebra, I've heard more than a few sponsors say no more booths if it's at the Venetian. Too much to fucking deal with, ESPECIALLY when alot of them have started putting their crews in other hotels to save headaches and in some cases dollars as well.

One would think that if AVN wanted to maximize their dollars taken in, since that is their business, they would put the show somewhere people WANT to be.

Personally I'd love for Paul to leave the video portion of the show at the Venetian, seeing that crowd wandering around clueless and looking straight out the trailer park just makes me cringe, since so many people see us as them.

Not saying they are all like that, just the ones that stand out.

Convention virgin..... ME.

Players ball was awesome. Went in upstairs (proper passes in hand) Sat down in the seats, got booted, so i played craps for a few hours. Came back and caught Digital underground getting to it. Went to General admission and got right up infront to watch the show. IT ROCKED...

Lemme repeat that, IT ROCKED.

I had No idea Who xzibit was, but he put on one hell of a show..

Thanks D-money, I'm looking forward to next years

D$ -- KB, the two of you are kick-ass organizers and workers! Thanks for all your time putting together The Players Ball. My friends and I had VIP passes and we got right inside without problems. We were running late, so we didn't encounter the long lines others did. Our problem was two of us were really sick, and one threw up on the security guard's shoes. We have pictures which will be forwarded to you. It seems that most of the complainers are MEN. Next time, just throw on a wig and a short skirt, and they will zip you right through the lines. I didn't know dokk got an award. to you dokk! Even though LV seems like the perfect place for a porn event, I would love to see something happen in San Francisco. I bet Evan would agree!

Thanks for the VIPs from your show D - It's a shame I never got close enough to the front of the line to use them after waiting in that "snake" rope line for nearly two hours.

I just got so hot and so annoyed with the people pushing to the front (from what I gathered, most of them were CES morons and locals) that I had to leave.

Maybe next year.

On the subject of convention problems, I think a lot of it stems from the date that it's held. It's right before CES and I've been attending that one since 1994.

Vegas is nuts for CES - the hotels KNOW that they can charge what they want now and the companies will still pay. They seem to be doing the same with us.

My advice would be to move the show to the week AFTER CES. Even two weeks after.

We got there fashionably late and we still waited in line for Lord of the Dance to let out...and their Rent-a-Gestapo gang....truly did not make for good moods...

Not your doing, D-Money or Alec Helmy....both events were well planned....C2K was totally fucked up.
