Will be interesting to see if the curse continues to hold up. That domain has been a disaster for a long time.

Sigh, it's a fucking shame to see people continuously squander this name. A fucking adult social network using a $300 script would have done better than they shit they have on there. Hot or not, really? It's like they hired KRL to manage the fucker.

I think the search / directory theme that was going at one point was probably the best attempt to monetize that domain. The current set up is pretty lacking, maybe the worst one to date.

Seems like everyone who gets this domain is pie in the sky with no real business plan or industry expertise to back it.

Why make/keep it a porn site at all? The word "sex" pertains to a lot more than porn, and without some manner of modifier attached to it, "sex" isn't a particularly well-targeted porn keyword to begin with.

The domain is likely considered damaged goods as a porn property by a lot of potential porn consumers. Rather than try to buck the history of Sex.com's failure as a porn site, maybe shooting for a "sex-positive" appeal to a largely female demographic is worth consideration?

In other words, why not go in a Cosmopolitan/"Sex in the City" direction with the domain? The demographic for those properties has serious spending power, and relatively little interest in porn, I suspect.

Actually I think a mainstream company that focused more on women's
issues in addition to sexuality and kept the content at "R" or below
would do good.

Exclusive interviews with mainstream female stars about sex and
their work/lives would be a big draw. Those interviews would be
linked by every major news outlet and drive traffic.

As a mainstream company they could advertise on TV and radio and
even have billboards. And who could forget the domain when it's type
in time.

Women's magazines still sale like crazy; this could be the biggest online
women's mag in the world selling mainstream ads and products.

What makeup company would be stupid enough to not run an ad??

- Contract 60 doctors to write one article a month on women's health.
- Hire the new Dr Ruth.
- cosmetic surgery : the inside scoop; who does it in your area?
- Soap Opera sex, what does it really mean?
-

-

Endless.

The prior owners made an attempt at that (though it didn't get done well at all). 'He said vs she said' blogs on sex.com with a man and a woman discussing things Dear Abby style...

The real problem they have is that a decade ago Sex was the word synonymous with sexual entertainment in the minds of most people. Currently anyone asked about a sexual movie or form of entertainment calls it porn not sex. Porn.com has become the alpha site and Sex.com will be in their shadow if they do anything adult.

Paying 13M to buy a domain that is not the preeminent one doesn't make much sense to me.... but the guys at PIMPROLL must be smiling their asses off because if Sex.com sold for 13M... Porn.com has to be worth mid to high 20Ms at least.

doubt it, its 2010 and 8year olds don't have creditcards and that's likely who would type that in... adults would type porn.com, xxx.com, fuck.com or any other millions of choices before sex.

Fucking idiots. Save yourself $13mil, buy a domain name for $10, and pump $1mil into marketing something online.

This domain is worthless.

making it mainstream sounds good on the surface, but with a name like 'sex' it will still have to dance on the fine line between R & X ratings to make sense. that cuts your potential customers by quite a bit.

The demographic for those properties has serious spending power, and relatively little interest in porn, I suspect.
haha - thats exactly right - you guys think they would monetize with PORN TRAFFIC??? hahahaha

there's a multitude of things they could do with that domain, steering clear of porn will be the best move they can make.
