Piracy is GOOD for music!

FACT: Piracy helps musicians that are GOOD. It only hurts a tiny percent of terrible major label artists and the RIAA's bank account.

The majority of people in the world don't buy music, ever. Recordings have become promotional material to sell concert tickets and merchandise. More people with your music = more fans = more concert attendees + merch sales + ipod ad revenue.

Combat porn piracy all you want, torrents aren't helping xxx, but damnit stop perpetuating the myth that free music is bad, you are hurting the artists!

i agree, i've grabbed all your artwork and will be giving it away. people will see your copyright and you will get more customers to produce more cartoons for. i'll take those cartoons and distribute them and you will have even more customers. with all the fans you will have you can make donkevlar tshirts and mugs and sell them.

Just because I can get music for free does not make me want to go to a concert of the artists. Not one bit.

Go fuck yourself.

Of course not, I did not say anything of the sort. You have to HEAR them and LIKE them to want to go to their concert, and unless they have a huge budget to spend on advertising to get you to HEAR and LIKE them they're going to rely on the magical wonders of FREE promotion to millions of people on the internet...

I am telling you this as a musician who knows first hand, I'm not talking out of my ass or trying to "troll" or whatever you kids are saying.

As I approach my 39th birthday, I love being called a kid.

And yes, you are obvious.

Happy birthday. If I was "trolling" I would have said piracy is good for XXX... I'm trying to clear up misconceptions about the music industry which I am a part of and know very well...

I have seen people buying albums rather than downloading them for free because of more respect for the artist.

its not just a matter of promotion though. the record companies make money off sales of course, but they are the ones that sign the bands and allow them to be able to quit their jobs and make music and tour in the first place. How does a band go from their garage or basement to a tour without that? Torrents? Youtube? its possible but highly unlikely...

In fact I think that's partially why music has been so terrible lately. Sure there are good bands out there and there is some good stuff coming out but not if you listen to the radio. According to the radio, around here anyway, it is all commercial pop crap that nobody will remember in 5 years.

Good bands are not getting signed because all their fans have their music already so they can't make bank on cd sales and putting them on tour isn't profitable enough for them as much as it is the bands so the only ones they do sign are the ken and barbie dolls they can market for and sell posters and other endless merchandise off of.

Would Tool be signed if they just came out today? How about David Bowie? The Rolling Stones? Bob Dylan? No way... not pretty enough.

the radio has been total garbage for 30 years. there is a renaissance in music at the moment with lowered recording and distribution costs. there are literally too many mind blowing artists to count. go to the myspace of an act you like, and click on the friends that are musicians - great way to discover music.

I'm not a huge music person... but the Internet has expanded my music base, types of music, artists songs, all over the world, the talent the world has is mind blowing and now it's no longer restricted, no longer limited, repeated 10000 times, forced on me is gone. It has made me attend more concerts, hit more clubs to listen to artists, seek those artists out and want/plan for future events around the world based on the music/events happening.

I purchased my last music cd 4-5 years ago... but I still buy music, I just do it smarter today and buy exactly what I want.

this only works for the smaller musicians. big name acts have always sold out long before piracy was around. back in the day I used to spend 100 dollars a week on cds...

I can imagine millions of people downloading free Michael Jackson or Frank Sinatra mp3 from torrents and then going to their concerts.
