paysite vs avs site question

If you have your own content, plenty of traffic to feed the site and your own paid hosting, does it make any sense to start a site as an AVS site vs. making it a paysite?

What about a paysite that starts an AVS site to feed traffic to their paysites?

AVS:
* retention is based on quality of AVS service
* provides traffic
* have to follow AVS's rules
* takes half your money and might shave

PAYSITE:
* you worry about retention and updates
* you have to worry about chargebacks etc
* you keep all the money (- processor fees)

If you start an avs site and it becomes popular and takes off, then you move it over to be a paysite, then you lost your avs site rebills...right?

Lethal--

Pretty good breakdown, I would add that nothing is stopping you from doing both and testing. There are risk/rewards with any partnership--and AVS is just that. Also "rules" are dependent on whether you are link listed AND what your site is like. You can always work out a flexible deal with most avs systems out there, rules are designed to make money for everyone in the network, not be a source of aggravation for webmasters.

If a had more time I'd go more in depth, but I'll bookmark this thread and come back tomorrow evening when I'll have a bit more time.

A great example of a site that does BOTH is bikinivoyeur.com
They have a program through ccbill and one through proadult.com (an avs)
I suggest you talk to them.

Cheers,
Tony

Well... heres the reason why I ask....

We have been thinking as starting a premium avs site.. with 400 plus pics. With galleries on each of our girls. Using that avs site to feed traffic to our other paysites. i.e. Want to see more of this model? Heres her real site.

I really dont know a ton about it other then its great traffic. The idea was posed to me by the guy that is designing our sites. It seems to be a good idea, but I dno't know all the in's and outs of it.

Of course it also depends on the content. Content suitable for an AVS is often not suitable to run a successful paysite with and a 'good' paysite will usually have far to much in to run as an AVS (all the existing AVS members not paying you a dime but burning bandwidth etc). I'd personally say that in many situations they are totally different beasts and not really compatible.

I like AVS sites, myself. They are like no-hassle paysites.

You may want to consider taking one step back and making a premium AVS site and feeding _that_ with your galleries and with traffic from regular AVS sites built around the models. It's pretty much the same plan you posted above, but you skip the paysite and just promote the premium AVS. That can be a very successful method. Also, in my experience, it is a lot easier to sell an AVS membership than to sell any single paysite.

Also, if the surfer doesn't like your site, he has a better chance to retain with an AVS membership than if he just had a single membership to your site.

I'm just a friend of Premium AVS.

Oh, yeah, I forgot to mention that. With recurring AVS memberships, retention is way better than any paysite I've ever used.

I agree with pretty much all that's been said.

With a GOOD Premium AVS (AC Gold was, may still be, ProAdult, some others) - you'll get 80%+ retention. Even with the lower payout, that's usually better in the long run.

It's perfect for a site that's got good content, but is too weak for a paysite.. Then all you have to do is get the initial sale and hope that they like the rest of the stuff in the AVS enough to stick around.

Cheers,
Backov
