20 copies in 10 minutes= 200 euros, 275$.

He could hire himself a full staff to do development.

A good example of that graphic isn't everything...
New games comes out with super realistic-looking graphic but the gameplay is shit. I still play WC3 and CS 1.6.

Really serious gamers like the superb and addicting gameplay(from what I hear). I love my Modern Warfare 2, and other high tech games, but I spend time playing crappy looking online flash games if it has good gameplay.

Plus, I think it was designed to have a retro feel. Good for him, I hope he rakes it in.

He's been on the frontpage of PCgamer and wiki confirmed the sales stats. He currently has a few coders, and some marketing guys on board so it seems (info on his blog).

from wiki:

Minecraft has received generally favorable responses from critics, and has had notably large numbers of sales. As of October 2010, Minecraft surpassed 1,500,000 registered users, and over 480,000 purchases.[12] In September 2010, after a "free to play" weekend, the game had a spike in sales of over 25,000 purchases in 24 hours.[13][14] The game has been praised for the creative freedom it grants its players in-game, and for how dynamic its overall gameplay is.[15][16][17] PC Gamer listed Minecraft as the fourth-best game to play at work in issue 200.[18] A review of the alpha version, by Scott Munro of the Daily Record, called it "already something special" and urged readers to buy it.

Having a shitty look just means you sell it for less... There are tons of lemmings out there who will buy it in droves.

That potato peeler in your kitchen cost you only $1.79 to $3.99 depending on quality, but everyone buys one so millions are sold every year.

Very true - There's been apps on my Touch or iPad I've played for weeks and on the other hand spent $65 on a new xbox or ps3 game and played once. Minecraft is fun for realz even though it looks like ass.

This game is the most successful low budget/shitty looking game of the century because of the marketing, social aspects and very addictive gameplay. So trust me it is very hard to reproduce his success. Most budget indie devs are lucky to sell a 100 copies of their games.

Right. If you ran money services for millions of people you wouldn't have an automatic freeze put in place for accounts that jumped from 0 to 600k in sales overnight. Nuh uhn, that would be foolish!

As should anyone taking in $600,000 for a third party in such little time. It takes a couple of simple steps to have your money unfrozen, unless you are a fuckup.

that is serious cash, indeed. Actually most of the games connected with Facebook are kicking asses. But Minecraft somehow tried to turn back the 90`s and obviously he made a goal in the first run. If many guys will repeat his step of making money it will be a mess

I have seen his game before. Pretty crazy. I don't get why people are so crazy about it.
But then again, I guess they just want to play something different from farmville and the rest.

A friend of mine is working as game designer for a company only developing/running subscription based browser games.

They started like 2 or 3 years ago with 2 people, now they have like 50 employees and make millions each month. Mainstream online games generate LOADS of money!

Life is all about playing a game better. The question is: have you made it to the next level? Have you seen a hidden character such as Noob Saibot, or something?

He was in the papers last week and it's true, he really does make that much. Game looks cool as well if you can get past the shitty graphics.
